Brother Gilbert (Bruce) Cardillo of New Melleray Abbey died peacefully at Stonehill Health Center on September 13, 2024.  There will be visitation from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 pm., on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at New Melleray Abbey, 6500 Melleray Circle, Peosta, Iowa.  Behr Funeral Home is assisting.

Br. Gilbert was born on Oct. 21, 1940. He entered New Melleray abbey in 1961. Br. Gilbert was the tailor and barber for the community for many years. He was artistic and had a good sense of humor.

Brother Gilbert had many friends within the community and with the many people who come here for retreats and visits. He was the treasurer for the Wednesday night AA meeting held at the monastery.

Brother Gilbert was good natured and had a propensity to reach out to those in need especially the underdog. He had a kind and generous heart and was sensitive, and hurt easily and forgave easily. He was very intuitive and could sense when someone was hurting and needed a kind word.

Br. Gilbert is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Ann nee Adonizio, Cardillo, and his brother Richard Cardillo. He will be missed by his two nieces Roseann Cardillo and Gina Cardillo.
