George A. Benn
George Augustine Benn, 81, of Dubuque, passed away Sunday, January 21, 2024.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until the 6:30 p.m. Funeral Service on Thursday, January 25, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd. Rev. Jack Redmond will officiate. Interment services and Military Honors will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 26, at the chapel at Mount Calvary Cemetery. The Dyersville American Legion Post #137, of which George was a long-time member, will provide Military Honors.
George was born August 18, 1942 in Dubuque, the son of Herbert and Frances (Kremer) Benn. He grew up in Dyersville, and graduated from Xavier High School. He married Linda Witt on November 29, 1969, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dubuque.
George served his country with the U.S. Army. He was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works for 31 years, until his retirement.
Baseball was a passion of George’s, and in 1962, he was a member of the Dyersville Whitehawks Baseball Team, who won Runner Up in the AABC World Series. He coached baseball for the Dubuque Reds in the Independent Baseball League, and was inducted into the Independent Baseball League Hall of Fame.
He was an avid Cubs and Hawkeyes fan. George loved hunting and fishing, especially ice fishing. He enjoyed country music, watching his “cowboy shows”, playing cards, and tending his large veggie garden, where he grew the best sweet corn. He loved spending time with his family, and his cocker spaniel, Honey.
George is survived by his wife, Linda, of Dubuque, his son Terry (Erika) Benn, of Tiffin, IA; four grandchildren, Irene, Karla, Jackie, and Paola; three great grandchildren, Aaliyah, Amar, and Alana; one brother, Louis (Ruth) Benn, of Manchester, IA; his sister in law, Margie Benn, of Dubuque; two brothers in law, Bill (Lynda) Witt and his children, Jonathon and Benjamin, of West Burlington, IA, and Bob (Ginnie) Witt and their children, Hope, Amber, Austin, and Justin, of Des Moines, IA; and many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Charles, Vernon, Herb, Tom, Ruth, Rosemary, Frances, Daniel, Loras, and Jim; and his parents in law, Bill and Leona Witt.
