James A. Sweeney, DVM

James Arthur Sweeney, DVM, was born August 12, 1931, in Dubuque, Iowa. He passed away on July 29, 2024, at his home in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 13th, 2024, at St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church. Jim’s Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Brian Dellaert officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors to be accorded.  Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.

Jim served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1956 as a field radio repairman. He graduated from Loras Academy in 1949 and Iowa State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1964. Jim practiced veterinary medicine in Greendale and Brookfield Wisconsin for six years. He and his brother, Bill, then opened Bloomington Veterinary Hospital in 1970 and practiced together until 2000. Jim sold his business and retired in 2009 after a 39 year career. Jim was devoted to his daughter, Kathleen, and supported organizations benefitting the disabled.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Lois; daughter Kathleen; stepchildren Laura Geisen (Ken), Karen Hamm (Steve), and Mike Corbin; grandchildren Zoe Geisen; Noah (Erika) Hamm and Laura Hamm; Zack, Alex, Nick, and Ben Corbin; former wife, Judy, and six nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mae Sweeney, siblings John, Mary Clair, Bill, and Anne.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Living Well Disability Services (Mendota Heights, MN), L’Arche Twin Cities; Partner Resources, Inc.; or Nativity of Mary Parish (Bloomington, MN).
