Robert L. “Bob” Eichman, 95, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, July 15, 2022, at Luther Manor in Dubuque.  Visitation will be held at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, from 4 PM to 7 PM, and at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, from 9 AM to 9:45 AM, followed by the funeral at 10 AM.  Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery following the funeral service.

Robert Louis Eichman was born in Dubuque on March 22, 1927, to Martin and Louetta (nee Kaufman) Eichman.  He was Dubuque “north-ender” and attended St. Paul Lutheran School, Jefferson Junior High School, and Senior High School, graduating in 1945.  He met his wife of 71 years, Damaris Brauer, at a church social event in 1949, and they were married at St. Paul’s on March 19, 1951.

After working at AY McDonald following graduation, Bob began working with his father in the electrical business started in the family garage on Washington Street—the Eichman Electric Service Company.  With his brother Bill, Bob became a journeyman electrician, and in 1961, following the death of their father, Bob and Bill assumed ownership of the Eichman Electric Company in Dubuque, and served many industrial, commercial, and residential clients throughout eastern Iowa and western Illinois until they closed in 1986.

Following retirement, Bob pursued his passions, including Scouting, the outdoors, photography, and Dubuque history.  Bob worked with scouts for many years at St. Paul Troup 48, and in 1990 received the Lamb Award, the highest scouting honor given by the Lutheran Church.  He loved spending time outdoors, especially canoeing, as counted as one of his favorite memories a canoe trip to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota with the fellow Boy Scout troop leaders after his retirement.

In 1998, Bob became a tour guide for the Dubuque County Historical Society and later for the Trolleys of Dubuque and continued that work until he was 91.  In 2014 he was awarded the Hospitality Leadership Award from the Dubuque Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.  He was an avid photographer throughout his life, with a special fondness for the landscapes, textures, and colors of Dubuque and the surrounding countryside.  He won multiple awards for his photographs at the Dubuque County Fair, including best-of-show, and created note cards from his photos and sold them at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium.

Bob was a deeply committed family man and was extremely proud of his three children and all they accomplished in life.  They inherited his love of music, history, and the hills, fields, and rivers of Northeast Iowa.  He is survived by his wife Damaris of Dubuque and his children Jonathan (Suzanne) of Arlington, Massachusetts, Jennifer (Yogen) of Princeton, New Jersey, and Jayson of Dubuque, and by his sister Carolyn of Picayune, Mississippi.  He was preceded in death by this brother William (Bill).

Donations in Bob’s name may be made to the Organ Fund at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Dubuque, or to Meals on Wheels.

Jamma L. Cechota

Jamma Lee [Arnold] Cechota of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of West Burlington, Iowa, was freed from this “crazy, nutty” world on the evening of July 16, 2022. The last 5 years and 9 months of her life were spent at Bethany Home, in Dubuque, where no one could resist her infectious belly laugh and dry sense of humor. Her biggest adventure while living in Bethany Home was a surprise evening at a drag queen show with her daughters and a niece and nephew.

Friends and family will say good-bye to Jamma at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa on Wednesday, July 20 at 11:15 am. Celebration of Jamma’s Life will follow on August 20, 2022 at E.B. Lyons Nature Center in Dubuque from 3-8 pm. Friends, family, and Bethany staff all welcome!

Jamma was born the eldest of five in Murphysboro, Illinois, on January 10, 1936. Of five children, she was the first to arrive and the last to exit. Eventually her family moved up north to Coal City, Illinois. Jamma attended the local high school, where her best friend introduced her to a handsome fellow from a neighboring town. Five years later, Jamma and John tied the knot and began their life together on a family acreage. Like many other women in the late 50s, Jamma worked until their first child was born. She was the quintessential domestic mother, 24/7. She baked, cooked, ironed, mopped, canned veggies, washed cloth diapers from 4 children, and took an enormous amount of photos. She loved making up songs and little ditties, most of which we still remember. Jamma loved all holidays and would stay up all night wrapping gifts and creating gorgeous Easter baskets. She once stayed up all night sewing puppets for her kids’ school puppet show, only to hear the next day that it had been cancelled.

In 1972, the family of 6 relocated to the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in southeastern Iowa. With the kids now diaper-free, Jamma began working outside the home at a local retail store and joined a bowling league. She also became fascinated with garage “sailing” and collecting interesting vintage pieces. She also took a writing course for children’s literature to challenge her imagination. In 1975, Jamma bid on an acreage and they became homeowners for the first and last time. She became known as “the flower lady” from passers-by – marigolds and hollyhocks being some of her favorites.

Jamma’s beloved husband of 58 years died in 2016. She also lost all her siblings: Madolyn, Myra, Phillip, and Buddy. She is survived by her four children: Madonna [Babak Mohajer] in Minneapolis; Cynthia in Dubuque; John Jr. [Margaret] in Dallas City, Illinois; and David [Teresa] in Cedar Rapids and their 9 children: Ellie [Sean], Marie, Caleb, Chloe, Josie, and Carson of Cedar Rapids, Olivia [Devin Quinn] of Charlotte, North Carolina and Isaac in Kilgore, TX [attending college]; nieces and nephews: Debbie, Kevin, and Kenny Carlson and Camille Miller; and best friends and euchre buddies Charlie and Betty Benbrooks in Braidwood, IL.

Jamma’s children are forever grateful for her gift of an idyllic childhood in the midst of the 1960’s social turmoil. May she enjoy plenty of monster cookies and belly laughs in her next adventure.

The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the loving staff at Bethany Home who loved Jamma and her eccentricities while accepting her tongue lashings with good humor.

Karl J. Millius

Karl Joseph Millius, 83, of Dubuque, died Friday after a long illness, July 15, 2022, at his home in Dubuque.

A private family service was held with burial at Center Grove Cemetery in Dubuque. A celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Karl was born January 20, 1939, in Dubuque, the son of the late Charles P. and Georgina M. Rafferty Millius. On April 30, 1966, he wed Lucinda “Cindy” Willey at St. Raphael’s Cathedral in Dubuque.  Together they shared 56 years of marriage.

Karl attended Loras Academy, graduating in 1957. He went on to attend Loras College for one year, later graduating from Iowa State University in 1961, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering. This education took him to John Deere where he dedicated 28 years of loyal service until his early retirement in July of 1992, at the age of 53.  His loyal dedication was also seen in his service to his country. Karl served in the United States Army for two years, stationed in Pine Bluff, Arkansas during the Vietnam Era.

One of Karl’s first jobs was as a soda jerk at Freund’s Pharmacy.  He loved planning summer vacations with the kids around the dining room table in January; gathering all the AAA books and maps and deciding where to go in the family station wagon was the best part. He truly loved ocean destinations like Nantucket, Florida and the Carolinas but also enjoyed Colorado.  He loved the Lord, his country, and his family.  Karl especially loved running and biking on the heritage trail with his family.  In later years, he spent endless hours constructing projects with his favorite grandson, Austin. He was the love of his life.

Karl had a beautiful voice and knocked Cindy out with his banjo playing and that is how she fell in love with him.  A gifted musician, Karl grew up playing piano and then the banjo. He was taught to read music, but found “playing by ear” to be more fun. At his peak, he won several banjo contests on his plectrum banjo. Besides music, he loved trains. He watched trains and walked the tracks in many different states. He built and enjoyed model railroading for many years with a fairly large HO gauge setup.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy, of Dubuque; his children, Michael (Pam Abare) Millius of Tucson, AZ; Sarah (Scott) Bowden of Durango, IA; and Suzanne (Bryan) Millius of Dubuque; his grandson, Austin Millius; brothers-in-law, Jack (Joyce) Willey of Sun City, AZ and Frank (Connie) Willey of Dubuque; his beloved dog, Charlee; and his cousin, Tom (Ethel) Brant of Leland, Florida; and nieces and nephews, Kristin (Vito) Schiro, Deanna (Kurt) Wisthuff, Anne (Gary) McCright, Mike (Pat) Meyer, Maria (Denny) Lemke, Steve Meyer.

Karl was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Ann Meyer; in-laws, Keith and Evelyn Willey; and his beloved dog, Berklee.

Karl’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to the hospice nurses Hillary, Ryan and Angela, for their kind and compassionate care. Also a thank you to the Dubuque Fire and Rescue for their help.

Also a special thanks to Dr. Mark Moore.

Annette Raye Bausman

Annette Raye (Hinebaugh) Bausman, age 90, of Elizabeth, IL, passed away on July 13, 2022, at the Galena Nursing Home.  To honor Annette’s life, a private family service will be held at a later date.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Annette’s family.

Annette was born on October 31, 1931, in Savanna, IL, a daughter to Roy and Clara Ferne (Rogers-Siefert) Hinebaugh.  She was united in marriage to Gerald Bausman on September 23, 1950, in Mt. Carroll, IL.  Annette spent the majority of her working career with the Savanna Army Depot, but ventured into being a realtor for some time, along with owning the Welcome Home Antiques Shop in Elizabeth with her husband Jerry after retirement.  Annette was a faithful member of the Elizabeth Methodist Church and was proud to be the choir director there for over 40 years.  Her commitment to her faith, family, friends, and community were always on display.  In her free-time she enjoyed playing bridge, working on her latest quilt, but her greatest joys were discovered in traveling with Jerry.  Camping along the way and wintering in Texas brought true delight to Annette’s days and it is well known that her happy place was sitting in the passenger seat with the road atlas firmly in hand.  We will miss our dear Annette more than words can depict, but we are grateful for the memories she leaves behind.
