Gerald Elmegreen
Gerald Elmegreen, 91, of Monmouth, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, March 14, 2025, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Gerald Elmegreen was born on August 17, 1933 on the family farm near Long Grove, Iowa, to Arthur F. and Berneil T. (Baughman) Elmegreen. He graduated in 1952 from Dewitt High School.
After graduation, Gerald drove a milk truck until he entered the U.S. Army, serving from 1953 to 1955. He was formally discharged in Scott County in 1955 earning an honorable discharge. In 1957 he began farming near the Ozark bridge, then in 1967 settled on a farm near Canton, Iowa. While farming, Gerald worked at United Livestock Auction in Maquoketa for several years.
On April 21, 1979, he married Judith Anne Eckelberg at the Salem Lutheran Church in Spragueville, Iowa.
Gerald had been a member of the Baldwin Saddle Club and later the Jackson County Horse and Harness Association for many years. He enjoyed riding, driving his Haflinger ponies and coon hunting.
Those left to honor Gerald’s memory include his wife, Judy Elmegreen of Canton, IA; children, Jodi Elmegreen of Canton, IA, and his son James (Kelly) Eckelberg of Baldwin, IA; Two grandchildren, Sarah Keeney of Baldwin, IA and Megan (Amanda) Eckelberg of Dubuque, IA; Two great-grandchildren, Hunter Eckelberg and Savannah Keeney. He is also survived by a brother Ronald Elmegreen of Monmouth, IA and sister-in-law Wanda Elmegreen of Monticello, IA. He was preceded in death by his sister Sue Bader of Eldridge, Iowa, and a brother Paul Elmegreen of Monticello, Iowa.
A gathering of family and friends celebrating his life will be held from 11 A.M. to 2 P.M., Sunday, March 23, 2025, at the Eagles Club in Maquoketa. At Peace Cremation Services have been provided by Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to the family.
