Joan Violet Pautvein, 82, of Apache Junction, AZ, formerly of Dubuque, IA died on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at her home in Apache Junction.

Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Monday, March 17, 2025 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

The Funeral Service for Joan will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory with Brandon Schetgen officiating. Entombment will be at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.

Joan was born October 15, 1942, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Leo and Cornelia (Cushing) Avenarius. On August 31, 1963, she married Robert Pautvein at St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on February 9, 2006.

Joan worked as a secretary for Dubuque Community Schools and Keystone AEA for many years. She will be remembered for how courageous she was, battling cancer for 23 years along with fighting other battles. She did all of this while still showing great love for and joy being around her family. Joan also loved to cook and shop, especially on Amazon.

Survivors include her three children, Cynthia (Kevin) Adams of Dubuque, Chad (Kelly) Pautvein of Wellington, CO, and Jason (Sophia) Pautvein of Smithville, MO; seven grandchildren, Matthew (Emily) Adams, Justin (Amanda) Adams, Charlie Pautvein, Grant Pautvein, Everett Pautvein, Hagen Pautvein, and Leo Pautvein; two great-grandchildren, Daisy and Briden; her loving companion, Bella; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one brother and sister-in-law, Clarence (Ellie) Avenarius.
