Larry G. Kuhlman

Larry G. Kuhlman, 78, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on Friday morning, May 16, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family under the care of Hospice of Jackson County.

Larry Gene Kuhlman was born on July 18, 1946 in Clinton, Iowa, to Clayton Frederick and Joyce Joan (Anderson) Kuhlman.  He completed his education at Maquoketa High School in 1964 and went on to serve his country with honor in the U.S. Navy. After his military service, Larry returned to his roots in Maquoketa, where he would establish his life’s work and his family.

On August 17, 1968, Larry married the love of his life, Cheryl Schurbon in Maquoketa, Iowa. Together, they welcomed three children into the world: Joey, Carey, and Kevin.

Larry’s professional life was as robust and varied as his interests. He was the proud owner and operator of Kuhlman Livestock and Feed in Maquoketa from 1967 to 1990.  He later transitioned to driving a delivery truck for Clinton Engines, where he remained until his retirement in 2002.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Larry was a member of the Timber City American Legion Post #75. His leisure time was often spent at the casino, where he reveled in the thrill of Blackjack and Poker.  He also was also a culinary enthusiast who enjoyed cooking in the kitchen and sharing his creations with family and friends.

A devoted sports fan, Larry’s passion for the Iowa Hawkeyes was unwavering, however, nothing compared to the joy he found in the company of his family. Larry’s happiest moments were those spent surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whose lives he enriched with his humor, wisdom, and unconditional love.

Larry’s legacy is carried on by his wife, Cheryl of Maquoketa, IA; his children, Joey (John), Careyanne (Don), and Kevin, all of Maquoketa, IA; his six grandchildren, Samantha (BJ), Madison, Jaysie (Porter), Josie, Cooper, and Karysa (Michael); and his two great-grandchildren, Kinnick and Hayden. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Wells of Maquoketa, IA; his brother, Randy (Karyn) Kuhlman of Springbrook, IA; his sister-in-law, Vicky Kuhlman; his cousin, Jack (Sue) Kuhlman of Maquoketa, IA; and one niece and two nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at 12 P.M., Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. at the funeral home.  Burial will be at a later date at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.
