Lillian McDonnell Freund
Lillian McDonnell Freund, 96, of Assisi Village, passed away Monday, September 10, 2018.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 14th at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, where she was an active member since 1951. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph the Worker Church.
A native Dubuquer, she was the daughter of John James and Lillie (Herl) McDonnell. She married George A. Freund on June 29, 1946 at the Cathedral of St. Raphael. George preceded her in death on May 29, 2006.
Mrs. Freund was educated at St. Raphael School, St. Joseph Academy and Clarke College. She was a past member of the Junior VNA, Mercy Service Club, Cecelia Study Club, St. Elizabeth of Hungary Mother’s Club and the Dubuque County Right-to-Life and enjoyed volunteering in many parish and civic activities.
Surviving are four daughters and two sons; Mary Elizabeth (William) Wagner, of Decorah, Iowa, John (Eleanor) Freund, of Dubuque, Margaret Conlon, of Dubuque, Thomas (Rae Ann) Freund, of Dubuque, Teresa (and special friend, Larry Boehnlein) Freund, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Catherine (Bret) Triervieler, of Dubuque and a daughter-in-law, Patricia (Keefe) Freund, of Renton, Washington. Lillian had 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, with one expected.
In addition to her husband, Lillian was preceded in death by two sons, James Edward in infancy and George A. Freund, Jr. in 2002. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary M. Ryan and her husband Charles C. Ryan, a brother John J. McDonnell, a sister-in-law Marie M. McDonnell, a brother-in-law Robert Freund and his wife Delia and a sister-in-law Mildred Duffy and her husband Patrick E. Duffy.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff at Assisi Village and Hospice of Dubuque for their loving care and concern during Lillian’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Dubuque County Right-to-Life.
