Shirley A. Spahn

Shirley A. (Hines) Spahn, 84, of Hanover, IL, formerly of East Dubuque, passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque, with Fr. Dennis Morrissy officiating. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens.

Visitation is from 3 – 7 p.m. on Monday and from 8:45 – 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque.

Shirley was born on July 19, 1934 in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Andrew and Susie (Hamsmith) Hines. She was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School. Shirley was united in marriage to Joseph F. Spahn on July 11, 1955 at St. Patrick’s Church in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on January 20, 2006.

She formerly worked for Regency Thermographers, McDonald’s in Galena, IL and Stampfer’s Dinette in Dubuque. Shirley enjoyed crocheting, knitting, decorating for the holidays, and spending time with family. Shirley was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Hanover.

Surviving are six children, Suzanne Burke of Freeport, Sharon Stratton of Dubuque, Mike (Liz) Spahn of Longmont, CO, Sheila Spahn of Dubuque, Jolene Bastian of Hanover, and Warren Spahn of Dubuque; 14 grandchildren, Angella and Adam Burke, Chad, Todd (Louanne) Stratton, Tyler (Sophea) Winter, Mallory(Kyle) Gross, Devin ( Katie) Spahn, MacKenzie (Sarah) Jolly, Sam Spahn-Hines, Casey Bastian, Christopher (Brittany) Bastian, Brittany (Nicholas) Drake, Ryan (significant other Peggy) Bastian, and Nicholas (fiance Hailey) Bastian; 23 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Susie, her husband Joseph, a grandson Andy, a brother, Hank, and son-in-law, Bob Bastian.
