Sister Katherine E. Heffernan, BVM, 101, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, at Mount Carmel Bluffs, 1160 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 9-9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025, in the Mary Frances Clarke Chapel at Mount Carmel Bluffs. Sharing of Memories will be at 9:30 a.m. followed immediately by the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial is in the Mount Carmel Cemetery.

Sister Katherine ministered as a counselor and secondary teacher in St. Louis and San Francisco and as a social worker and secondary teacher in Tulsa, Okla. She served as the director of social and clinical services at Chicago hospitals and as a clinical social worker and special education care manager for the Chicago Board of Education.

She was born on April 14, 1923, in Omaha, Neb., to John and Julie (Anheuser) Heffernan. She entered the Sisters of the Good Shepherd on Sept. 8, 1958, and professed first vows on April 5, 1961. She transferred her vows to the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Jan. 20, 1973.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Julie McGoogan. She is survived by two nieces, a nephew, and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 52 years.
