Wayne F. Sherman

Wayne F. Sherman, age 84, of Mobile, AL and formerly of Dubuque, passed away at 4:35 a.m., on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Opp Health and Rehabilitation.  To honor Wayne’s life, family and friends may visit from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday at St. Patrick’s Church, 1425 Iowa Street, with Rev. Dennis J. Quint officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

Wayne was born on July 9, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of John A. and Josephine (McBride) Sherman.

Wayne graduated from Loras Academy, Class of 1959.  He married Mary Hipschen on April 18, 1964, at St. Mary’s Church.  They celebrated 56 wedding anniversaries together before she sadly preceded him in death on May 28, 2019.  Wayne was always a hard worker.  He drove delivery truck for Stanley Home Products for 21 years before beginning his career in sales.  He was a salesman for the Vernon Company and Borley Advertising for several years before his retirement.  Wayne had an easy going, likable personality that put people at ease and served him well throughout the years.  He was very active in the community and volunteered with several organizations in the area.  He was a proud member and leader of the District Commissioners for the Boy Scouts of America, Dubuque District. Wayne volunteered with the Dubuque Food Pantry, where he served 2 terms as the Chairman of the Board.  He was a member of the Teamsters Union and served on the Board of the General Drivers Credit Union.  He was a long time member of St. Patrick’s Church where he served as an usher from 1990 until 2000.  When he found some free time, Wayne enjoyed being in the great outdoors.  He went camping and fishing whenever he had the chance.  He was an accomplished woodworker, creating beautiful furniture and other woodworking pieces.  Wayne also liked to coin collecting.  His family was always his main focus, and the most important aspect of his life.  Wayne was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, brother and friend who will be greatly missed.

a sister-in-law,
June Hipschen, Redwood City, CA;

and his nieces and nephews.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Mary Sherman; a sister in infancy, Mary Sherman; and 2 brothers-in-law, Marv Dalsing and John Hipschen.

Wayne’s family would like to thank the staff at Opp Health and Rehabilitation for their kindness and the outstanding care they provided for Wayne.
