Arlene R. Henneberry

Arlene R. Henneberry, 86, of Cascade, Iowa, formerly of Bernard, Iowa, passed away on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2024, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Friends and family may visit from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday April 1, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, with a family wake service and rosary to be held at 3:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday starting at 9:00 a.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday April 2, 2024, at St. Patrick Garryowen Catholic Church in Bernard, Iowa with Father Mark Osterhaus officiating.  The burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Arlene was born on April 4, 1937, in Dubuque County, daughter of Vern A. and Rita P. (Donovan) McCarthy.  She was united in marriage to her husband Richard P. Henneberry on September 14, 1957, at St. Patrick Church, Garryowen and together they had nine children.  They lived on Richard’s family’s Jackson County Seven Generation Farm that was established in 1845 before moving to Cascade in 2002.

She was a member of St. Patick’s Rosary Society, Christ the King Mother’s Club, Power of Prayer, a founding member of Cascade Area Right to Life established in 1989, Meals on Wheels and secretary of Aquin Parent Teacher Association.

Arlene attended one room school house in Dubuque and Jackson Counties and graduated high school at St. Patrick’s Garryowen.  She was a loving and dedicated wife, home-maker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who cherished every moment of rocking babies.  She was in the sales division with Montgomery Wards and later with Younkers.  She and Richard cherished and remained close with their Garryowen classmates.  They loved to attend local dances whenever possible.

Arlene is survived by her children Beverly (Jake) Reiter of Cascade, Iowa, Tom (Linda) Henneberry of Robins, Iowa, Fred (Kathy) Henneberry of Dubuque, Iowa, Ron Henneberry of Cedar Rapids, Iowa,  Dave Henneberry of Burleson, Texas, Margie (Todd) Behrends of Amber, Iowa, Julie (Greg) Runde of East Dubuque, Illinois, Mark Henneberry of Dubuque, Iowa and Ryan (Tammy) Henneberry of Bernard, Iowa,  21 Grandchildren, Justin (Amber) Reiter, Stan (Samantha) Reiter and Hannah (Marty) Kelzer,  Conor Henneberry,  and Michaela Henneberry , Danny Henneberry (Melissa Gehl) and Lee Henneberry,  Abbie Henneberry,  Jayla Henneberry, Blake Henneberry and Vincent Henneberry,  Tony (Sonu) Merfeld,  Kiel   ( Emily) Merfeld,  Jenny Behrends  and Dani Behrends, Franchesca (Derek) Doty, Harrison Runde  and Ella Runde, Kyle (Emily) Merkes, Chloe Henneberry and Raylan Henneberry and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, granddaughter Amelia Runde, her parents, brother Jack McCarthy and sisters Patricia O’Connell and Janeen Pape.

The family extends a special thank you to the Hospice of Dubuque staff.
