Bette Trannel

Bette (Vanderah) Trannel, age 92, of Bethany Home, Dubuque (formerly of East Dubuque and Sunset Park Place, Dubuque) passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 16, 2018at Bethany Home,surrounded by her loving family.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 20 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, East Dubuque. Burial will be in the East Dubuque Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday, June 19 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, in East Dubuque, and from 8:45 – 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home, where the parish rosary will be said at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Bette was born September 21, 1925 in East Dubuque, the youngest daughter of Henry and Mary (Houselog) Vanderah. She married Arthur L. Trannel on September 18, 1946at St. Mary’s Church in East Dubuque; he preceded her in death on January 15, 1992.

She lived in East Dubuque all her life until she moved to Sunset Park Place, Dubuque, in 2006. She attended St. Mary’s Grade School and graduated from East Dubuque High School as valedictorian of her class. Bette was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and its Altar & Rosary Society. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a volunteer for many church and school functions.

Bette was an inspiration for her family in her staunch belief and participation in her Catholic faith, in her strong work ethic, and in her commitment to education. Bette’s greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. She was a huge sports fan and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play basketball, baseball, softball, football, track, swimming, wrestling, rowing, and hockey. She was also an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bulls. She enjoyed cooking and was best known for her homemade bread and pies. She also enjoyed music, dancing, reading, traveling, bowling, golf, and was always ready for a good card game.

She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

She is survived by six sons: James (Marie) Trannel, Joseph (Mary) Trannel, John (Mary) Trannel, and Jeffrey (Lauri) Trannel, all of East Dubuque; Jerald (Diane) Trannel of Batavia, IL; and Dr. Thomas (Dena) Trannel of Onalaska, WI; 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; her grandson, Jacob Trannel; two sisters Anna (Howard) Metzger and Marie (Andy) Roth; and seven brothers Eldon, Joe, Melvin, Merlin, Bob, Henry, and Leo “Babe” Vanderah.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Bethany Home for their loving and compassionate care over the last six years and a special thank you to Hospice of Dubuque for their support and comfort her last few days. Also, a thank you to the staff at Sunset Park Place for their wonderful care during the years she lived there.
