Carol A. Canfield

Carol A. Canfield, 82, of Asbury, IA, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 24, 2023, at the MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center, surrounded by loved ones.

Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 30, 2023 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory.

Visitation will also be held from 9:30 am until 10:45 am on Friday, December 1, 2023, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory, prior to the service at 11:00 am with Father Steven Garner officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

Carol was born April 17, 1941, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Howard C. and Maxalinda M. (Carroll) Smothers. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School. Then married Glenn R. Canfield on July 9, 1959. They later divorced.

Carol was an avid bowler for over 50 years where she was involved in numerous leagues, tournaments, and secretary positions. She served on the Board of Directors for over 10 years and was a member of the 600 Club. Carol was inducted into the Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame on May 14, 2019.

Carol worked at Rings Restaurant, Adams Company, Regency Thermographers, and Eagle Window and Door until retiring.

Carol loved camping with her family in her younger days, dancing, making crafts, and crocheting items for parties and special occasions. She also enjoyed hanging out with family by going out for Friday night supper, playing bingo, trips to the casino, and going to Tama (Meskwaki), watching the grandkids play sports, and watching her Hallmark, ION, and Lifetime TV shows. She loved hanging out and going shopping with her girlfriend, Patty, and laughing when her shoes would fall off getting into the car. She had a nickname of Jake and girlfriend. Carol was also proud of being the beginning of five generations of girls.

She is survived by her five children, Patty (Doug) Garner, Glenn (Elise) Canfield, David Canfield, Sharon (Mike) Schlarmann, and Chris (Tina) Canfield; grandchildren, Stacey, Mike, Brian (Marcia), Doug (Maggie), Kyle (Jacklyn), Cole (Jalyn), Amelia (Andrew), Adam, Michael (Beth), Joshua (Amanda), Alyssa (Nate), and Jase; great-grandchildren, Martin, Andrea (Tim), Hannah, Kayla, Alexis, Kylee, Hayley, Chloe, Caleb, Jax, Nora, Alex, Mason, Makayla, Chloe, Dominick, Lacy, Rhaella, Kylaina, and Liam; great-great-grandchildren, Lillian and Isabell; sisters, Eleanor Ward, Gert (Mark) Frommelt, Linda (Clem) Davis, Donna (Dick) Haberkorn, and Janet Smith; brothers, Butch Smothers, Curran (Lynn) Smothers; and sister-in-law, Pat Smothers.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Rick and Fred Smothers; sister, Wanda Ortiz; sister-in-law, Rose Smothers; brothers-in-law, Donald Ward, Saul Ortiz, and Billy Puccio; grandson, Ryan Schlarmann; granddaughter, Danielle White Canfield; niece, Tammy Edgar; and nephew, Ricky Smothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carol Canfield Memorial Fund.
