Carol Ann Smart, 86, of Dubuque, died Friday, December 1, 2023, at the Grand Meadows in Asbury.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 10:45 am on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

The Funeral Service for Carol will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Jason Davis officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.

Carol was born November 11, 1937 in Dubuque, Iowa. She was the daughter of Wilbur and Grace (Perkins) Peebles. She grew up on a farm east of Galena, IL. Her fondest memories of childhood were spending time with her cousin Kay at their grandparents home in Benton, WI. She graduated from Scales Mound High school in 1955. Carol was united in marriage to Robert L. Smart on April 28, 1956 at Zion Lutheran Church, they celebrated their 65th anniversary before his death on June 11, 2021. In May of 2022 she moved to Oak Park Place, where she made many friends and really enjoyed her activities and outings.

Carol was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran church for over 60 years, she taught Sunday school and vacation bible school for many years. She was a den mother when her son Steven was a cub scout. She worked at MercyOne Dubuque for 31 years, most being in the operating room department, taking many young people under her wing along the way. Carol lived her life with grace and humility.

Carol loved to garden, cook and bake, she delighted in preparations when her son Michael was coming to visit. She took on the challenge of learning to make “pasty”, an English dish on her mother’s side of the family which was a traditional birthday meal for her daughter Stacey.

Carol is survived by her daughter, Stacey S. Tittle (Cindy Henkel) of Dubuque; sons, Steven L. Smart (Ubonwan) of Chon Buri, Thailand; and Michael D. (Timothea) Smart of Helena, MT; a nephew, Kevin Peebles; her cousin who was like a sister, Kathryn Daugherty; and family friends, Bob, Kelly, Allison (James) and Adam Curtis.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert and a brother Wayne (Eileen) Peebles.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all the wonderful caregivers for their care and guidance through Carol’s illness and to Hospice of Dubuque and Luther Manor Grand Meadows for their compassionate care at this time.

In lieu of flowers or plants memorials may be made to The Dubuque Humane Society, Hospice of Dubuque or Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
