Cathy A. Steines
Cathy Ann (Bartels) Steines, 72, of Menominee, IL, passed away Friday evening, December 12, 2025, at home surrounded by her loving family.
Cathy was born on August 16, 1953 to Laverne and Romane (Caven) Bartels at Maquoketa, IA. She graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1971. She became the loving bride of Don Steines on August 5, 1972. Together they raised four children and celebrated 53 years of happily married life.
Faith and family were very important to Cathy. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was their greatest supporter, and she was proud of each of them. She held them all close to her heart.
Throughout her life, Cathy was very active in the community, teaching CCD classes, being a 4-H and American Heritage Girl Club leader, and writing the “Menominee Notes” for the local newspapers.
She worked as the parish secretary for Nativity BVM Parish and in the bookshop at the Sinsinawa Mound. She enjoyed working at Mount Saint Francis, retiring after spending 21 years as their switchboard operator.
Cathy was a member of the Menominee-Dunleith Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary, serving as their secretary. She was a member of the St. Ann’s Society at Nativity BVM. Cathy was a 30-year dedicated member of the Sinsinawa Mound Dominican Associates. She enjoyed spending time with her H.A.G. friends.
Music was always her passion. She spent many years singing and directing in the church choir. She enjoyed playing the harmonica and the snare drum for the “Older and Bolder” band.
Cathy is survived by her husband, Don; children, Christine (Scott) Gitz, Daniel (Heather) Steines, Molly Steines, and Kimberly (Ross) Hartman; grandchildren, Nathan (Abby), Preston, Cassie, Hannah, and Sawyer; great-grandchild, River; siblings, Larry (Linda) Bartels, Cheryl (Tom) Hasken, and Neil (Janelle) Bartels; brothers and sisters in-law, Lois Casper, Doris Steines, Dori Johnson, Jane (Jim) Munson, Jim (Sharon) Steines, and Dee (Steve) Kalmes; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law Odilo and Ardis Steines, and brother-in-law Merrell Casper.
Cathy’s family would like to extend a most heartfelt thank you to the cancer care team at Mercy Cancer Center, Hospice of Dubuque and the members of the community for their care, kindness, and compassion. A very special thank you to Cathy’s daughter Molly, for all the care and dedication to her mother.
The visitation will be held on Friday, December 19, 2025, from 3:00-7:30PM at the Miller Funeral Home in East Dubuque, Illinois, where the Parish and St. Ann’s Rosary will be recited at 2:30PM on Friday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 PM on Saturday, December 20, 2025 at Nativity BVM Catholic Church in Menominee, IL, with Fr. Bosco Aruldoss officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
