Daniel J. Buelow, 81 of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on April 11, 2026, in Dubuque, Iowa, after a battle with dementia.
Visitation for Dan will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Peosta, Iowa, where a prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held for Dan at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s the Baptist Parish in Peosta, Iowa, with Rev. Steven Garner Presiding. Burial will be held in St. John’s Cemetery in Centralia, Iowa with Full Military Honors.
Dan was born October 10, 1944, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Norman “Pete” and Beulah “Bee” (Miller) Buelow. He graduated from Senior High School in Dubuque, IA, and the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, WI with his bachelor’s degree. Before college he served in the Air Force, 1963 to 1967.
He was united in marriage to Betty Turnis on December 30, 1972, at St. John’s the Baptist in Peosta, Iowa.
Dan was a dedicated professional and passionate educator who made a lasting impact on his community. He shared his expertise as a mechanical engineering technology instructor at Northeast Iowa Community College, where he was known as an enthusiastic advocate for his students as an avid teacher who inspired many to pursue their goals. He was a substitute teacher in several local school districts following his retirement from NICC. His years of commitment to education leaves behind a meaningful legacy that will not be forgotten. As an auctioneer and owner of Dubuque Auction and Realty Services, he built a reputation for integrity, knowledge and genuine connections with those he met.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Buelow of Dubuque, IA; four children, Nathan Buelow ( fiancé, Audrey Robertson) of Denver, CO, Carmen (Todd) Mundt of Plainfield, IA, Bradley (Maria) Buelow of Epworth, IA and Andrew (Kristin) Buelow of Dubuque, IA; his mother, Bee Buelow of Dubuque, IA; nine grandchildren, Jacob and Brody Mundt, Katie, Daniel, Grace and Adalyn Buelow, Hallie, Naomi and Oliver Buelow; one sister, SueBee (Skip) Breitbach of Dubuque, IA; one sister-in-law, Suzy Buelow of The Villages, Florida; his in-laws, Bill Turnis of Bernard, IA, John Turnis of Magnolia, TX, Ginny (Gary) Recker of Manchester, IA, C.J. (MaryBeth) Turnis of Peosta, IA, and Linda (Dan) Gantz of Wisconsin Dells, WI.
He is preceded in death by his father, Pete Buelow; his brother, Greg Buelow; his parents-in-law, Joe and Norine Turnis; his sisters-in-law, Norma Weber, Ruth Turnis and Phyllis Turnis; his brother-in-law, Leo Weber.
