Daniel L. Yarolim

Daniel L. “Dan” Yarolim, 71, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away at home after a short illness on Thursday morning, February 29, 2024.

Born on Christmas Day in 1952 in Anamosa, Iowa, he was raised by his loving parents, Dale A. and Edna M. (Finkenbinder) Yarolim. He attended Maquoketa High School, graduating in the class of 1971. Following high school, Dan answered the call of duty and served his country in the U.S. Navy until receiving an honorable discharge in April of 1976. His time in the Navy instilled in him a sense of discipline that he carried throughout his life.

Upon returning to civilian life, Dan married the love of his life, Julie Fuglsang, on June 20, 1981, in Andrew, Iowa. Their loving union was blessed with a son, Britt, who brought immense joy and pride to Dan’s life.

Professionally, Dan began his career at Clinton Engines in Maquoketa before his military service. After returning home, he briefly resumed his role at Clinton Engines and then transitioned to a long-standing position with the CB Company in Maquoketa. For over 25 years, Dan was a dedicated employee, working in the shipping and receiving department and eventually as a buyer. In 2003, he found his calling at the Maquoketa Community High School as a custodian. Dan’s love for his job was evident in the care he took in maintaining the school environment, and he retired in October of 2022.

Dan’s artistic spirit shone through in his hobbies. He had a talent for painting and woodcarving, often creating pieces that reflected his keen eye for detail and his appreciation for nature.   He also was a loyal fan of the Chicago Bears and enjoyed cheering on his team through victories and defeats alike. Dan’s love for his family extended to their canine companions, Ruby and Bella, who were also a source of joy and comfort in his life.

Dan is survived by his devoted wife, Julie Yarolim of Maquoketa, Iowa; his son, Britt Yarolim, also of Maquoketa; his siblings, Dixie Brinkman, Doug (Renea) Yarolim, and Denise (Bill) Schmitz, all of Maquoketa; 2 nieces, 3 nephews, 8 great-nieces and 10 great-nephews. Dan was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Jacob Yarolim.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, March 7, 2024, at Salem Lutheran Church in Andrew.  A memorial visitation will be held from 5 to 7 P.M., Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.  Cremation rites have been accorded and burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Daniel L. “Dan” Yarolim memorial fund has been established.
