Daniel W. Murphy, 71, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on October 29, 2024.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday November 3, 2024, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, with a Wake Service starting at 12:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday November 4, 2024, at Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Jeffrey Frieden officiating.
Dan was born on February 2, 1953, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Donald and Lucille (Knockel) Murphy. He attended Wahlert Catholic High School, NITI, and Loras College for Finance and Accounting. He married the love of his life, Penny Klein, on June 5, 1982, in Balltown, Iowa. Dan made a living doing various construction jobs, bartending, and doing anything to do with numbers and accounting. He was also a lifelong member of the Key West Sportsman’s Club as well as the Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Church.
Dan was an Irish man of strong faith, and was proud of his family. He loved cheering on his favorite sports teams: Chicago Bears, Chicago White Sox, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He also enjoyed the simpler and calmer things in life such as golfing, grilling and smoking ribs, coin collecting, astronomy, and watching the weather – especially a good Midwest storm.
Those left to remember Dan’s legacy include his wife of 42 years Penny Murphy, his daughters that he was incredibly proud of Molly (Josh) Beckley, both of Dubuque, and Meghan (Tanner Jansen) Murphy of Madison, Wisconsin, and “his jewel” granddaughter Callie Beckley. He is also survived by his siblings Denise (Ron) Christopherson, Deb Schmitt, Dennis (Lynn) Murphy, and Dawn (Frank) Carney, in-laws Karen Murphy, Phyllis Murphy, Amy (Jim) Schmitt, Laurie (Rick) Juran, Peter (Carmen) Klein, Julie Donovan, Tony Klein, Todd (Heidi) Klein, David (Amanda) Klein, Kenneth “Chip” (Elsa) Klein, his furry buddy Nemo, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He is reunited with his parents Donald and Lucille, father and mother-in-law Kenneth and Sally Klein, siblings Dave and Tom Murphy, and in-laws Mike Schmitt, Dennis Donovan, Paul Klein, and Eddie Graham.
The family would like to thank Dr. Winskey and the Medical Associates Neurology Department, MercyOne Emergency Department, friend Kyle Kutsch, and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Andy, Jill, and Amy, for always taking such amazing care of Dan.
Pray, Hope, and Don’t Worry. – Padre Pio
