David was born October 19, 1947, in Manchester, IA, the son of Dale and Mary Jane (Carrothers) Patton. On June 27, 1970, he married Susan Marie Budyak in Dubuque. She preceded him in death on August 25, 1997.

He graduated from West Delaware High School in 1966, and furthered his education at the University of Dubuque, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1970.

David was a teacher at Eisenhower Elementary School, retiring after 33 years.

He had a deep love for words and ideas, which he expressed through writing. He was the author of several published books and, though a man of few spoken words, he poured his thoughts and reflections onto the page with care and purpose. David grew up on a farm near Coggon, IA, which shaped his values and work ethic throughout his life. He was a proud Freemason and Shriner, dedicating countless hours to community service. His faith was central to his life; he served as a Deacon and was an active member of the church choir. He also served a term on the local school board, believing strongly in education and giving back to his community. Dancing was a favorite pastime of David and Sue, which he continued to enjoy thereafter.

Survivors include three children, Jeffrey (Carlie) Patton of Crystal Lake, IL, Jason Patton of St. Louis, MO, Sarah Patton of Des Moines, IA; five grandchildren, Tyson, Hailee, & Hannah Patton, and Alonzo & Xavier Munford; two brothers, James (Diane) Patton of Ames, IA, Mark (Emily) Patton of Wilton, IA; and three step-siblings, Sandra (Glenn) Hodge, Jo Veith, and Doug (Suzanne) Preussner.

Besides his parents and wife, David was preceded in death by his step-mother, Eliza, and two sisters, Candice Patton and Beverly Balster.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
