David J. McDermott, age 56, of Dubuque, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital with his loving mother by his side.  To celebrate David’s life, family and friends may visit from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Monday, October 13, 2025, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street.  Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date.

David was born on October 11, 1968, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Shirley and Edward (McDermott) Apel.

David graduated from Wahlert Catholic High School.  He was a hard worker who worked at several casinos including the Silver Eagle and Diamond Jo.  David was lastly employed as the manager of the bus depot at Trailways until his health issues forced his early retirement.  He loved learning new things and was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time on the computer.  David was a good person who always took care of those less fortunate than himself.  He will be greatly missed.

David is survived by

his loving mother, Shirley Apel;

a brother,
William Apel, Dubuque, IA;

and several cousins.

David was preceded in death by his father, Edward C. Apel; a brother, Alan Apel; and aunt, Patricia (McDermott) Anger; and an uncle, Joseph McDermott.

David’s mother would like to thank Dr. Ringold, Dr. Whalen and the nurses and staff of Tri-State Dialysis, the doctors, nurses and staff of UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital and Ennoble Manor for their kind and compassionate care of David.
