David J. Nebel Sr.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of David John Nebel Sr., who left this world on February 8, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Friends and family may visit from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday February 11, 2025 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road.

A Sharing Time will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday February 12, 2025 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded.

David was born on December 12, 1948 in Dubuque, Iowa. He was a man of integrity, kindness, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. Throughout his life, he exemplified the values of hard work, generosity, and compassion, touching the lives of many with his warm heart and steadfast spirit.

On May 27, 1993, David married the love of his life, Yvonne (Pust) Nebel. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He found his greatest joy in the love of his family, cherishing every moment spent together. His wisdom, humor, and guidance created a legacy that will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

David’s garage was always open to all. Whether you dropped in for a visit or just needed a moment to unwind, you would always find a stocked fridge and his jukebox spinning his favorite old country songs. It was a place of warmth, laughter, and good company—a reflection of the man himself.

David had a strong work ethic and a passion for his trade, working as a master electrician and plumber. He was the proud owner of Nebel Electric, where he built a reputation for excellence and dedication to his craft. His skills, leadership, and commitment to quality service left a lasting impact on his community.

Outside of work, David had many passions. He loved working on his 1960 panel truck and 1957 T-Bird, spending hours perfecting every detail. He also had a deep love for travel, exploring destinations across the USA as well as countries like Germany and various areas of the Caribbean. In his earlier years, he enjoyed camping and riding his horses with family and friends, creating unforgettable memories along the way.

David proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1975. His service was marked by dedication and bravery, earning him numerous distinguished medals and honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, Air Bronze Medal, Letter of Appreciation (Vietnam Service), Combat Aircrew Wings, Air Medal Strike Flight, Vietnam Service Medal, Meritorious Mast, Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Rifle Expert, Rotors and Related Systems, Good Conduct Medal (commencing November 10, 1969), Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Air Medal/Strike Medal, and Navy Unit Commendation.

David is survived by his beloved wife, Yvonne; his children, David J. Nebel Jr. (Christina), Julie McDermott (Travis), Tim Leslein (Tessa), and Tammy Machers (Brian); and his cherished grandchildren, Preston Nebel, Mason Nebel, Aidan McDermott, Halle McDermott, Julia McDermott, Olivia (Leslein) Scheffert, and Emma Machers. He is also survived by many other loving family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Nebel; his mother, Rose Weber; his brothers, Gary Nebel and Danny Nebel; and his granddaughter, Brittney (Leslein) Gaylord.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Legion Post 6 in David’s honor.

David’s courage, kindness, and love will never be forgotten. May he rest in eternal peace.
