David L. Ehlinger, 84, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on May 23, 2024 at home.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Church with Mass to be held at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Steven Garner officiating. Entombment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery with the ceremony of the Four Fives by the Dubuque Fire Department.  Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, IA is assisting the family .

David was born on February 10, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Leo and Eldora (Ludwig) Ehlinger. He married Sharon Reilly on October 14, 1961, at Sacred Heart Church in Dubuque.

Dave graduated from Loras Academy and pursued a career in barbering after attending Barber College in Cedar Rapids. Dave dedicated over 30 years to the Dubuque Fire Department before retiring.

He was a skilled woodworker and took great pride in building his family home from the ground up, where he raised his loved ones. Dave found joy in camping with his family in his motorhome, cooking delicious meals, and dancing.

He will be remembered for his devotion as a husband, father, and grandfather, his infectious sense of humor, and the cherished memories created with friends and family.

Dave is survived by his wife of 62 years Sharon; two children Nancy (Bob) Kowalske and Michael (Karen) Ehlinger; his granddaughter Reilly Ehlinger; brother-in-law Jim Reilly and sister-in-law Maureen (Mike) Digman.

He was preceded by his parents; a daughter Karen Pawlak, two brothers, Cleon Ehlinger & William Ehlinger and a sister-in-law Patricia Wemett.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Chris Deuve, Michael Heeren, and Hospice of Dubuque for their unwavering support and care. Dave will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
