Don was born the middle child of five boys to Edmund and Mary Alice (Puls) Heim on September 23, 1950, in Hazel Green, WI. His early childhood was spent in Galena and Scales Mound, Illinois. As a boy he worked on his grandfather’s and uncle’s farms and had a strong work ethic from a young age. He saved up enough money to go buy his first Harley as a young teen and drove it around the countryside. In 1966 the whole family moved to East Dubuque, IL, where he graduated from East Dubuque High School in 1968.
Don and Bev Stelpflug were married from 1968 to 1985, and from this union they had six children.
From 1986 to 2004, Don was married to Cecilia Morrison, with whom he had two children.
On August 18, 2012, Don married Angie (Atkinson) McMahon and welcomed a bonus daughter into his family.
Don was employed with the Chicago Foundry from 1968-1977. In 1973 he established Professional Roofing and Construction and was in business for the next 52 years.
Don worked hard and played hard. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and spending time on the Mississippi. Later in life he purchased another Harley. With his new found freedom Don enjoyed meeting many new friends and acquaintances in his travels. Don was also active in the public ministry with the Dubuque Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
