Forrest E. Davis

Forrest Eugene (Gene) Davis, 80, of Barnes City, Iowa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. Gene was born on January 7, 1946, at home in Montezuma, Iowa, to Vernon and Erma (Binegar) Davis. Gene attended Montezuma High School, where he was a standout football and baseball player.

In 1967, Gene was united in marriage to Barbara Jean Hartman of New Sharon. Together they built a life rooted in family and partnership. To this union, three children were born: Sean, Mechile, and Melissa.

Gene was a man who lived life loudly, honestly, and with a sense of humor that could light up any room. Known for his quick wit, strong opinions, and generous heart, Gene was the kind of person people remembered long after the conversation ended. Whether sharing a story, delivering a punch line, or lending a hand in the community he loved, Gene lived life on his own terms and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Gene worked for Manatt’s and throughout his life owned and operated several businesses. He ran a moss rock installation company, operated the Bass Master Bait Shop, worked as an antiques dealer, and was widely known as a respected fur dealer. Gene had an entrepreneurial spirit and a reputation for doing things his own way.  Those who knew Gene will remember him as a firecracker (feisty, energetic, opinionated, and honest) with a quick wit and a punch line ready for everyone he met. He deeply loved his family and treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gene enjoyed simple pleasures: a quick card game, a competitive round of checkers, fishing from his boat, and relaxing on the porch surrounded by family and friends. He was also an avid Denver Broncos fan and rarely missed the chance to cheer on his team. Gene believed strongly in giving back to his community. He volunteered for Barnes City Fun Days, supported Figure 8 races, and proudly served 12 years as a Barnes City councilman.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Erma Lou Davis; his brothers, Buddy, Vernon, Rick, Bill, and Terry; his sisters, Debbie Polson and Bonnie Johnson; his father-in-law, Likel Joseph Hartman; and his mother-in-law, Lucille Dolly Huit Hartman.

His memory will be lovingly cherished by his wife of nearly 59 years, Barbara Davis of Barnes City; his children, Lani (Brian) Hawk of Belle Plaine, Sean (Polly) Davis of Oskaloosa, Mechile (Charles) Adams of Norwalk, and Melissa (Timothy) Gerten of Sherrill; seven grandchildren, Arianna (Jared) Buckallew, Everett Davis, Eva Adams, Zak (Destiny) Eash, Avri Eash, Hunter Eash, and Ashttyn Eash; nine great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law Mona Davis; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever remember his humor, strength, and unmistakable spirit.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Barnes City at a later date, where family and friends are invited to gather to honor and celebrate Gene’s life.
