Francis D. Motto

Francis Donald Motto, “Scotty”, was walking home when an angel took his hand and said I know the way. On the evening of September 23, 2023, Scotty left the harbor where he had spent his life here on earth to be with our Lord.

Scotty served in the United States Navy aboard the USN CV33, Kearsarge, for four years and continued his love of the sea throughout his life.  Following his years of service, he attended Pierce College, Woodland Hills, California, and was a brother in the Phi Delta Psi Fraternity where he made many lifelong friendships.  He graduated with a degree in Finance from California State University, Northridge, California.  He met his wife, Barbara, and spent the next 65 years by her side. Together, they lived and raised their two daughters, Amy and Kris, in Chatsworth, California where they lived for more than three decades.

Scotty was a CFA and worked as an Executive Vice President for Security Pacific Bank and Bank of America in Los Angeles for a career spanning 30 years. Upon retiring, they moved to Dubuque, Iowa where he discovered an interest in the local community theaters. He spent many memorable years at the Grand Opera House and the Bell Tower Theater, where he worked in different roles and made dear friends.

During his time in Dubuque, Scotty also went by another name, “Papa,” as he was the most beloved grandfather for over 32 years.  As a grandfather, he was always there to provide his overwhelming love, patience, and support.  Papa was like a father to his four grandchildren – and will always be cherished for the warm memories, comfort, and peace that he provided them.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Barbara; his two daughters, Amy Huntley (Darren) and Kris Omahen (Brian); grandchildren, Elizabeth Courtney, Nicholas Courtney (Haley), Taylor Courtney, and Tyler Motto-Omahen.

The family will hold a celebration of life in Malibu, California where he loved to fish, look out to the sea, and remember his days as a sailor.
