Francis J. Vonderhaar

Francis J. “Yogi” Vonderhaar, 92, of New Vienna, Iowa passed away Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Monticello Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Monticello, Iowa.

Francis was born on June 26, 1933, son of Albin and Agnes (Schwers) Vonderhaar of New Vienna. He graduated from St. Boniface High School in New Vienna and enlisted in the US Army. He proudly served his country overseas while in service. Upon his return home, he purchased a farm near New Vienna. He married the love of his life, Elaine Wedewer, on August 29, 1959. Together, they farmed and raised their two children. Yogi also worked as a USDA food inspector at the Dubuque Packing Co. and sold Funks G seed for many years. He also co-owned the Cascade Sales Barn and United Livestock Auction with his son, Bob. His top priority was always getting the best price for the farmer’s cattle.

Yogi spent many summers umpiring baseball games for high school, college, and semi-professional teams. He also enjoyed playing cards, and trips around the area to local casinos.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elaine; children: Sandy (John) Lambert of Fort Madison, Bob (Kay) Vonderhaar of Cascade; grandchildren: Cody (Lindsey) Torgler of Tiffin, Matt (Chelsie) Vonderhaar of Carpinteria, CA, Molly (Jake) Connolly of Cascade; great-grandchildren: Everly and Josie Torgler, Mila Vonderhaar, and Finn and Riggs Connolly; in-laws: Judy Vonderhaar, Joan Wedewer, and Kathleen Trenkamp.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Leonard and John Vonderhaar; sisters: Rita Schuster and Theresa Elgin; in-laws: Marge Vonderhaar, Melvin Shuster, James Elgin, Art (Clara) Wedewer, Howard (Darlene) Wedewer, Lawrence (Helen) Deppe, Bernice (Arnold) Lueken, Leon Wedewer, David Wedewer, and Albert Trenkamp.

Per Yogi’s wishes, there will be a private family ceremony held at a later date.

The family thanks all the staff at Monticello Nursing & Rehabilitation Center who provided such compassionate and excellent care for Yogi.
