George Erwin White

George Erwin White, 81, of Manchester, Iowa, passed away on Monday, April 16, 2018, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20, 2018, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester. Friends may also call one hour before services on Saturday at the church. The Funeral Service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at the United Methodist Church in Manchester, with Reverend Phil Rogers officiating. Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery in Manchester, Iowa.

He was born on June 9, 1936, in Manchester, the son of George T. and Louiemaude (Harmen) White. He was raised and educated in the area. Following his graduation from Manchester High School in 1955, George worked at the city service station and drove semi.

George married Virginia Morley on his twenty-first birthday, June 9, 1957, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Three children were born to this union. In 1960, George began his career at Bennett Explosives as an explosives expert. He retired in the late 1990s.

George was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church in Manchester. He and Virginia were members of the Mountain Doers Camping Club, traveling to many states over the years. George had also served on the Delaware County Conservation Board and the Fish and Game Club Board.

George loved spending time with his friends, being outdoors, and gardening. He also enjoyed doing word finds and playing cards and dominos. He cherished time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Virginia White of Manchester; his children, Deb (Gary) Gibbs of Manchester and Scott (Crystal) White of Williamsburg; five grandchildren, Kayla (Corey) Hood of Manchester, Becca Gibbs of Marion, Morgan Gibbs of Manchester, and Abigail White and Caroline White, both of Williamsburg; three great-grandchildren, Millie Jones and Aubree and Grayson Hood; three sisters, Eleanor Williamson of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Florence Parrott and Helen (Cliff) Cole, all of Manchester; and many sisters- and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Doug White; his brothers, Bill White, Ted Williams, Walter White, and David White; three sisters, Etta Ballard, Mary Porter, and one in infancy; and many sisters- and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews.
