Gerald “Jerry” F. Marshall, age 80, of Bellevue, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

A Funeral Mass celebrating Jerry’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 6, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bellevue. A Wake Service will be at 2:30 p.m. with visitation to follow from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 5, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bellevue. Additional Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., Friday prior to Mass at the Hachmann-Mier Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue.  Burial with Military Honors, conducted by Bellevue American Legion Post #273, will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Bellevue.

Jerry was born on September 12, 1945, in Bellevue, the son of Robert and Dorothy (Mesch) Marshall. He graduated from Marquette Catholic High School in 1964. On September 4, 1965, Jerry married Ruth Manders, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bellevue. He was drafted into the United States Navy in October of 1965 and proudly served his country.

Jerry worked for the railroad in Clinton before beginning a 30-year career at John Deere Dubuque Works in 1968. Alongside his full-time work, he farmed for more than 39 years—a passion that brought him great joy before eventually moving into town. Jerry also had a lifelong love for horses and gardening, which he loved to share with others. He was very involved  with the Bellevue  Horseman’s Club.

Following retirement, Jerry drove the school bus for Marquette Catholic Schools for 24 years, forming special bonds with students and families alike. He was an active member of the Bellevue Knights of Columbus Council #1354 for much of his adult life, a role that became especially dear to him in recent years. Jerry was also a faithful member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Bellevue American Legion Post #273.

Jerry was truly one of the kindest souls—someone with a huge heart and an endless ability to make people feel loved and welcomed. He never met a stranger, only a friend he hadn’t talked to yet. Known for his “embellished” stories, he had a special gift for making people laugh. Above all else, Jerry loved his family deeply. Time spent together meant everything to him, and he made sure those he loved truly knew it.

Though his shoes will be incredibly hard to fill, we are deeply blessed to have been loved by him for all these years.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth; his children, Troy (Kathy) Marshall of Hiawatha, Mike Marshall of DeWitt, Chad (Julie) Marshall of Amarillo, Texas, and Traci (Jared) Freiburger of Asbury; nine grandchildren, Kara (Drew) McGovern, Jenae Marshall, Brady, Natasha, Ashlyn, and Brock Freiburger, Joshua and Jacob Marshall, Alex Marshall and one great-grandchild Jaxon McGovern; a sister, Sally (Nick) Fondell; sisters-and brothers-in-law, Barb Marshall, Joe Hipschen, Dorothy (Donald) Michels, Darla (Larry) Hingtgen, Pat Dosland, and Wayne Manders; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Dorothy; his mother and father-in-law, Chris and Veronica Manders; a granddaughter, Grace Marshall; siblings, Robert “Joe” Marshall, Kay Hipschen, and Ruth Ann Jess; and brothers-in-law, Ole Dosland and Leonard (Darlene) Manders.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Jerry’s memory.
