Helen M. Clemens, 93, formerly of Peosta passed away Friday, August 1, 2025, at Accura Health Care in Cascade, Iowa, surrounded by her family,
Visitation for Helen will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 18, 2025, at St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta, Iowa, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Steven Garner officiating. Burial will be held in St. John’s Cemetery in Centralia, Iowa. Reiff Funeral Home is assisting the family.
She was born April 7, 1932, in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Joseph and Alice (Mohr) Schmitt. She is a graduate of the former St. John the Baptist High School in Peosta. On September 13, 1952, she was united in marriage to William Clemens. The couple farmed in the rural Peosta area for many years. He preceded her in death on October 18, 2013.
She was employed at Dubuque Packing Co, and in the Dietary department of Northeast Iowa Community College. Helen also worked at the concession stands at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds.
She enjoyed many card games with her siblings along with dominoes and gambling at the casino’s. She loved her relationship with her sisters, the memories she had of them growing up together, the times they went to garage sales to find treasures, the many “girl trips” they took together. She was an impeccable housekeeper and did it all from baking and cooking to helping with all the farm chores and keeping the lawn and her flower gardens.
She was a member of St., John the Baptist Parish, and its Altar and Rosary Society. She was a 4-H leader for several years and volunteered with the election poles in Dubuque County.
She is survived by her children, Wanda (Jerry) Brink of Elkader, Dana (Todd) McDermott of
Bernard, Doug (Molly) Clemens of Bernard, June (Geoff) Grassle of Nisswa, MN, Karin (Ron) Costa of Whitebear Lake, MN; 10 grandchildren, Preston (Megan) Brink, Crystal (Andy) Hoefer, Travis McDermott, Cody (Nic) Noonan, Bailey, Whitney and Wesley Clemens, Taylor Jackson, Will Grassle, Gina (Forest) Wrede and Grace Costa; her great grandchildren; Lillian and Ila Brink, Hannah, Lacey and Bo Hoefer, Leo, Ally, Abe and Ike Noonan and Clara Wrede; her siblings, Donnie (Darlene) Schmitt of St. Louis, MO, JoAnn Witterholt-Wigel of St. Peters, MO, Mary (Roger) Weydert of Dubuque, Sally Donaldson of Russellville, AK, Tony (Gina) Schmitt of Dubuque, one sister-in-law, Judy Digman of Dyersville.
She is also preceded in death by her parents; her father and mother-in-law, Louis and Leona Clemens; brothers and sister-in-laws, Pat (Maxine) Schmitt, Vernon (Betty) Schmitt and David “Pete” Schmitt; her sisters and brother-in-laws, Alice Mae (Roger) Irving, Barbara “Bobby” (Jay) Reding; and brothers-in-laws and a sister-in law, Dale Digman, William Witterholt, Ray Weigel, and Louie (Rita) Clemens.
