Irene M. Scherrman

Irene M. Scherrman, 92, of Farley, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Sunset Park Place in Dubuque, Iowa.

Visitation for Irene will be held from 2 to 7 p.m., on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Farley, Iowa where a prayer service will be held at 1:30 p.m., a family Rosary and Tribute will be held at 3:00 p.m., and the Farley American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 6:00 p.m.   Visitation will also be held after 9 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Services for Irene will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 22, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Farley, Iowa, with Rev. Mark Osterhaus presiding and Rev. Steven Garner con-celebrating.  Burial will be held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Farley, Iowa.

She was born Jully 8, 1933, in Farley, Iowa, daughter of Leo and Alvina (Schmitt) Kraus.  She is a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School in Farley, then attended Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids.  On June 20, 1957, she was united in marriage to Laurence Scherrman in Farley, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on June 21, 2021.

She was a faith filled woman.  She lived out her faith, by giving to the less fortunate and especially her passion to protect the unborn.  Her constant devotion the to the Lord and all His creations has left a lasting impression on her entire family.  These admiral characteristics won her the Dyersville Area Woman of The Year Award in 2011.

She worked for the Cascade Pioneer and at Dubuque County Right to Life, for which she also volunteered.   Irene enjoyed all family gatherings especially hosting Christmas Eve. She was an avid golfer, which she enjoyed with family and friends.   She loved tending to her flower gardens, reading, and a good game of euchre.  She loved her dogs Chippy and Libby-even in her last days she was searching the papers for another dog.  The couple (and their dogs) loved to travel through-out the United State to visit relatives, and took several trips abroad.  She especially delighted in her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Farley, and the Farley American Auxiliary.
Those left to cherish her memory are her four children, Cynthia Sueppel of Cedar Rapids,  Lili (Steve) Metz of Dubuque, Karen (Dan) Kinley of Elgin, IL and Peter (Nettie) Scherrman of Littleton, CO; 8 grandchildren, Wes Peterson (and friend, Wendy) of Dubuque, Mallory (Robert) Davies of Dallas, TX, Tessa (Scott) Howard of Dubuque, Cam (Lisa) Kinley of Cary, IL, Alex Sueppel (and friend, Leighanne) of Austin, TX, Abby (John) Perleth of Dubuque, Cara (Reid) Kauffman of Cedar Rapids, and Ellie Peterson (and friend, P.J.) of Dubuque; 13 great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Sue Kraus of Farley, and Sharon Osterhaus of Dyersville; one brother-in-law, John “Jack” Scherrman of Sioux City; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one son-in-law, Gary Peterson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph (Liz) Kraus,  Jim (Phyllis) Kraus, Doris (Kenneth) Kemp, Bill (Betty) Kraus, Mary (Carlton) Westermeyer and Melita (Harry) O’Neil; three brothers-in-law, Paul Scherrman and Robert (LaNore Goodale  and Mary Ellen Moran) Scherrman; and Dick Osterhaus; one sister-in-law, Francis “Sis” (John Cavanagh and Dayton Smith) Smith; her father and mother-in-law, John and Mildred Scherrman.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, the staff of Sunset Park Place, and the many family members and friends that visited her regularly.

In lieu of flowers donations may be given to Dubuque County Right to Life, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Power of Prayer in memory of Irene J. Scherrman.
