With broken hearts, we announce the passing of Jake Schissel, age 43.

Jake lived life in a way that was impossible to ignore. There was never a dull moment when he was around; he was an experience. Whether he was making people laugh, telling stories, or simply being himself, Jake had a way of leaving an impression that won’t soon be forgotten.

He shared three children, Jacquelyn, Grace, and Isaac, with his lifelong partner, Christina Pfab. His family was an important part of his life, and the memories they created together will be cherished forever.

Jake was a devoted fan of the Kansas City Royals and the Buffalo Bills, cheering them on through every season with unwavering loyalty. He loved being around family and friends and especially enjoyed spending time on the water. Whether it was the river, a lake, or an inflatable pool in the backyard, that’s where many of his happiest memories were made.

Jake is survived by his lifelong partner, Christina Pfab; his children, Jacquelyn, Grace, and Isaac; his parents, John Schissel and Patricia (Meloy) Fleege; his siblings, Alexandra (Schissel) Harkey and Michael Larsen; his grandmother, Sharleen Schissel; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends who will miss him dearly.

Though his life ended far too soon, the stories, laughter, and memories he created will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

A short prayer service and burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 17, at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome to attend.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, July 19, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Dubuque Eagles Club on Century Drive. All who knew and loved Jake are invited to join us as we gather to share stories, remember his life, and celebrate the memories he leaves behind.

In honoring Jake’s memory, his family also hopes to bring awareness to the devastating impact of alcoholism. Addiction is a disease that affects not only the person struggling, but also the families and loved ones who walk beside them. If sharing Jake’s story encourages even one person to seek help or one family to have a difficult conversation, his legacy may help bring hope to others facing similar battles.

Jake will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
