James “Jim” Joseph Thill, 63, of Dubuque, died Thursday, September 10, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

A prayer service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, September 14, 2026 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory followed by visitation until 6:00 pm.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Jim will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Holy Spirit Parish- Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Martin Coolidge as the Celebrant. Entombment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque at a later date.

James was born December 30, 1962, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Deacon James Sr. and Sandra (Jones) Thill. On May 10, 1991, he married Jennifer “Jenny” Fangman in St. Mary Catholic Church in Dubuque.

Jim graduated from Wahlert High School in 1980 and later graduated from the Paramedic Program with NICC.

Jim worked as a cement truck driver for Flynn, then a Police Officer for the City of East Dubuque, and most recently worked as a Security Officer at the University of Dubuque.

Jim proudly served in the Navy Reserves and was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing and looked forward to watching NASCAR, especially cheering on his favorite driver, Kyle Busch, as well as following Indy Car racing. Most of all, Jim cherished the time he spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren. His family was the center of his life, and the love and memories they shared together brought him his greatest happiness and will be treasured always.

Survivors include his wife, Jenny Thill of Dubuque; four children, Lisa (Steve) McGrath of Franklin, TN, Caitlynn (Alex) Helbing of Dubuque, Jacob Thill of Dubuque, and Wyatt Thill of Madison, WI; daughter-in-law, Sadie Thill of Dubuque; four grandchildren, Collin and Maxwell McGrath, and Leo and Lincoln Helbing; two sisters, Kelly LeGrand and Renee (Harry) Benedict both of Dubuque; siblings-in-law, Curtis Wolbers, Gene (Karen) Fangman, Ann (Blaise) Vrotsos, Jane (Steve) Oneyear, and Chris (Mark) Murphy; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law, John and Mary Fangman; son, Hunter Thill; sister, Roberta Wolbers; and nephew, Nicholas LeGrand.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to Dr. Hermann, Mercy Ambulatory, especially, Karl, Katie and Josie, Hospice of Dubuque, and all of the family and friends for their compassionate care and support during this difficult time.
