Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm Thursday, June 27, 2024 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
The Mass of Christian Burial for James will be 10:30 am Friday, June 28, 2024, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Tyler Raymond as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque at a later date.
James was born on November 9, 1930, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of Leroy and Clara (Kintzle) Richman.
Jim attended several years of high school but left to help run the family bait business on the Mississippi river where Lock and Dam #11 are now located. He found his forever job at H & W Motors at the age of 18. He proudly enlisted in the army during the Korean War and honorably served his time stationed in Germany. He returned to his driving position with H & W Motors of Dubuque, retiring in 1992 after 44 years.
He was united in marriage to Rosemary Oster on May 15, 1954 at St. Mary’s Parish in East Dubuque, IL. They were blessed with 50 years together and raised and loved 6 children before Rosie was called home on July 5, 2004.
Starting their life together as renters in Dubuque, in 1962, Jim and Rosie purchased their home in Waupeton. They worked for years to update and improve their home and property and where Jim enjoyed landscaping, cutting his lawn, and tending his award winning roses. He was a very active man and after retirement, helped several neighbors with farming chores. In 1999 he took a part-time position as grounds keeper with the Sisters of the Presentation until 2003 when he took time off to care for Rosie. He returned to that position in 2005 and continued to work until 2020, when he “officially” retired at age 90.
Jim was a member of Balltown St. Francis of Assisi Parish and several organizations including the Guttenberg Fraternal Order of Eagles #4114, and the Lone Pine Golf Club of Colesburg. After his retirement from H & W, he took up golf as a hobby. While frustrated with the game itself at times, he made a lot of good friendships and enjoyed his many years participating in the sport. He also enjoyed spending time on the river, especially a boat ride to Cassville with his Balltown friends, and being out and about in the local community.
Family was an important part of Jim’s life. He was proud of the strong work ethic that he and Rosie instilled in their children and he enjoyed family gatherings and watching the family grow. We are deeply saddened today as we say goodbye to Jim for now, but know he is reunited with Rosie and we look forward to the day we are all reunited in Heaven.
Those left to cherish Jim’s memory include his children, Carol (Tom) Heim of Dubuque, John (DeeDee) Richman of Dubuque, Joe Richman, of Yuma, AZ, Helen (Patrick) Cox of Dubuque, Linda (John) Ginter of Dubuque, and Cathy (Paul) Koerperich of Epworth; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Ed Ehlers.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Clara; his wife, Rosemary (Oster) Richman; his siblings, Neil, Richard, Thomas, Linda Ehlers, and Judy; and a son-in-law, Ted Splinter.
Jim’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Medical Associates for all of their kind and compassionate care, and the Sherrill Fire Department.
