Jean Anne Potts, 87, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family, Thursday, February 20, 2025.

A prayer service will be held at 2:30 pm on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Crematory followed by visitation until 8:00 pm.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Jean will be at 10:30 am, on Friday, February 28, 2025, at the Church of the Resurrection with Father Phil Gibbs as the Celebrant. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West at a later date.

Jean Anne was born September 14, 1937, in North Buena Vista, IA, in the same home as her mother, Rose. Jean was the only child of Marion Charles and Romalda “Rose” Magnalena (Engling) VanHorne.

Jean attended Scared Heart grade school and high school at Immaculate Conception in Dubuque. After graduating Jean attended Clarke College where she earned her teaching endorsement and started her career. Her first job as a teacher was in a one room schoolhouse in the west part of  Dubuque. She also taught in the Dubuque Community School District as a substitute teacher.

She taught until she started her family; then began to help her father at Feller-Van Horne Upholstery. She spent decades helping her father and her son run the company. The customers always said she was the sweetest woman. She liked to work with the customers, and they all loved her. She was so good at helping them pick out their fabrics and was an amazing sewer. She took pride in working with her son and keeping the legacy of her father’s business alive. She worked there until her retirement five years ago.

Jean was an avid sports fan who loved watching the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes and especially her children and grandchildren’s games. Jean also loved playing bridge with her good friends and euchre with her family.

She married Gene Potts on August 16, 1958, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dubuque, IA. Together they raised their children, Jeff (Barb) Potts, Joe (Shannon) Potts, Jay (Jackie) Potts, and Julie (Kevin) Timmerman. One of her greatest joys were her grandchildren, Kathryn (Jason) Clarke, Abigail (Blaine) Bertsch, Alexander Potts, Harrison Potts, Jonah Potts, Julien Potts, Maxwell Potts, Hannah (Blake) Huston, Nicholas (Lauren Montgomery) Timmerman, Ellie (Casey Perrenoud) Timmerman, Savanna Callies; and great-grandchildren, Monroe Clarke, Ledger Clarke, Penelope Bertsch, Gwendolyn Bertsch, and another great-grandchild expected in July.

She was preceded in death by her son Jamie; and her parents, Marion and Rose VanHorne; and her father and mother-in-law, Irvin and Anna Potts.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff, respiratory therapists, and dieticians at MercyOne Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to the Church of the Resurrection or The Boys and Girls Club of Dubuque.
