The Funeral Service for Joan will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory with Deacon Dave Roth officiating. Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.

Joan  was born May 31, 1938, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Joseph and Lorraine (Clemen) France. On November 26, 1959, she married Joseph R. Sutherland at St. Patrick Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on February 14, 2023.

Joan received her RN from the Hospital School of Nursing at Mercy, a BSN from the University of Dubuque, and an Associate of Arts and Health Care Administration Degree from Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny.

Joan worked as the administrator at Ennoble Manor Care Center in Dubuque, retiring in 1999.

Joan was a passionate sports fan who rarely missed a race or game. She followed Tony Stewart closely on the NASCAR circuit and proudly supported both the Arizona Cardinals and the Denver Broncos. Her love of baseball also inspired her and Joe to volunteer at spring training games during their time in Arizona.

Well-informed and engaged, Joan never shied away from a lively discussion about current events or politics. She enjoyed keeping up with the news, especially Fox News, and could often be found browsing QVC or Amazon for her latest finds. Joan had a creative side, delighting in knitting and crocheting gifts for loved ones and making blankets for the American Legion in Dubuque. In her downtime, she cherished quiet moments with her beloved dogs, a good book, or the timeless melodies of big band music. With a sweet tooth to match her warm personality, there was always a candy bar close at hand.

Survivors include her siblings-in-law, John (Jean) Sutherland of Cottonwood, AZ, James Sutherland of Dubuque, Paul Sutherland of Cherokee Village, AK, and Mary Capesius of LeClaire, IA; several nieces and nephews; her two Goddaughters Julie Capesius of Windsor Heights, IA and Jill (Howard) Bradbery of Dubuque; as well as several cousins.

Besides her parents and husband, Joan was preceded in death by a twin brother, Joseph France; brother-in-law, James Capesius; and a sister-in-law, Patricia Taylor.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the charity of your choice.

Joan’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Dubuque, MercyOne, and Bethany Home for their care and support. They would also like to thank their long time friends, Kenny and Lori Wilson, for all they did over the years.
