John J. Schwendinger
John Joseph Schwendinger, 84, of Dubuque, died Saturday, July 24, 2021, at his home.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm Wednesday July 28, 2021 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Cremation Service 3860 Asbury Road.
The Mass of Christian Burial for John will be 10:00 am Thursday, July 29, 2021, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Martin Coolidge as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque. The service will be live streamed on Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home’s Facebook page and will also be available to view later at www.hskfhcares.com.
John was born January 4, 1937, in Dubuque, the son of Alphonse and Catherine Cleary Schwendinger. On July 30, 1960, he married Jean R. Manahl in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dubuque. She died April 2, 2020.
He worked for Jeld-Wen.
He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, enjoyed bowling, camping, and loved farming. He worked on automobiles and enjoyed hunting with his grandsons and brother. He especially cherished time with family and also was the best Euchre player in Dubuque.
Survivors include one son, James Schwendinger of Dubuque; two daughters, Connie Schwendinger-Gruber and Catherine Flores, both of Dubuque; eight grandchildren, Tony (Stefanie) Flores, Andy Flores, Angie Flores, Ryan (Dana) Gruber, Brandon Gruber, Katie (Adam) Kurt, Kristina Gruber, and Adriana Flores; thirteen great-grandchildren, Austin Venzke, Ava Flores, Aidan Kelley, Amelia Flores, Cruz Kelley, Andrew Flores, Emmett Flores, Selena Flores, Dominick Soberanez, Alivia Gruber, John Flores, Sophia Gruber, Hazel Kurt; two brothers, Donald Schwendinger of Soldiers Grove, WI, and James Schwendinger of Cuba City, WI; and two sisters, Virgina McGovern of Kansas City, MO, and Rosemary “Roy” Weydert of Winthrop, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Robert and Anthony Schwendinger, two sisters, Kathleen McKillip and Margie Saugling.
