John P. Kane
John P. “Paul” Kane, 93, of Bethany Home in Dubuque and formerly of Bernard, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at Bethany Home.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 12th, 2023, at St. Patrick’s Church, Garryowen. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by the Cascade American Legion Post 528 and the Iowa Army National Guard. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, Dubuque, Iowa is assisting the family.
Paul was born March 7, 1930, the son of Joseph and Mary Kane. He served in the United States Army from 1954-56 and was employed at the M & H Company in Bernard for many years, and later at Dague Implement in Maquoketa. Paul was a long-time member of the Bernard Commercial Club and Bernard Volunteer Fire Department and also served as Fire Chief for a brief time.
He married Grace Merfeld of Bernard at St. Patrick’s in Garryowen in 1959 and she preceded him in death in 1963. He later married Grace Sweeney Dunn in 1981, also at Garryowen, and she preceded him in death in 2018.
He is survived by a son, Kevin (Laurie) of Springfield, MO and their children, Kelsey and Allison (Ray Hornback); a brother, Tom, of Dubuque; stepchildren Peggy Dunn Bills of Milwaukee, WI; Patrick (Arlene) Dunn of Des Moines; James (Susan) Dunn of San Diego, CA; and William Dunn Jr. of Bernard; and grandchildren Kelli, Terry, Patrick, Shawn, Carl, Chris and Katherine; great grandchildren Vivian, Ian and Triston; and great great grandchildren Gracie and Charlie. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, and a brother, Joseph.
Paul’s family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Bethany Home, which gave him such exceptional care in his time there.
