Leroy Blakeman

With gratitude for a long life well lived, and with quiet sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Leroy.

Visitation will be from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on January 17, 2026, at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Rd., Dubuque, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Center Grove Cemetery, Dubuque.

Leroy was the son of William and Sarah Blakeman; brother to Lillian, Lois, William, Joyce, Charlene, Duane, Paul, Bruce, Carolee, Gayle, and Mark; devoted husband to Emmy (who preceded him in death in 2006); loving father of Sylvia and Mike (Bev) and cherished grandfather of Eric, Philip, Carl, Patricia, Jane, and Betsy.

Born and passing in Dubuque, Iowa, Leroy lived a life defined by service and dedication. He proudly enlisted in the United States Army in June 1948, beginning a distinguished military career that included service during the Korean conflict. Stationed in Germany, he met the love of his life, Emmy. Together, they shared 49 years of marriage, building a life rooted in family, travel, and quiet devotion.

Leroy retired from the military with honors in June 1968. He continued his service to his country as a clerk with the United States Postal Service, beginning in 1970 and retiring in 2007. In total, Leroy gave 57 years of combined federal service.

A devoted husband and father, Leroy was a humble and private man whose life reflected integrity, loyalty, and duty. He loved life, cherished his family and friends, and lived with quiet strength and purpose. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emmy; his son-in-law Fred Sullivan; his sisters, Lillian Blakeman and Lois Keck; and his brothers William, Duane and Bruce Blakeman.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Hawkeye Care Center, Hospice of Dubuque, and Dr. Cao for their compassionate care, and to Tracy Lee, whose love and dedication brought Leroy companionship and comfort in his final years. With deep respect and gratitude, we thank Tim Ludwig, Leroy’s steadfast friend of 38 years, for his unwavering commitment to Leroy’s well-being and affairs, and Abe Raber, whose unselfish care gave Leroy dignity and quality of life in his final years.
