Mark S. Wolbers, 78, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on August 25, 2026, at home.

Visitation will be Sunday, August 30 , 2026, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with a wake service to be held at 12:45 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026, at Holy Spirit Parish, Holy Trinity Church with Rev. Jacob Francois officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors accorded by the American Legion Post #6 and the Iowa Army National Guard.

Mark was born on November 11, 1947, in rural Dubuque County, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Anita (McDonnell) Wolbers. He graduated from Wahlert High School in 1965, he was drafted during the Vietnam War serving in the United States Army from 1967-1969, primarily serving in military intelligence including time spent at the US Pentagon. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant.

He married Joanna Blomgren on July 8, 1967, at St. Patrick’s Church in Ottumwa, Iowa. She preceded him in death on March 26, 2013.

Mark worked 36 years at the Dubuque US Post Office and served as a Treasurer and Secretary of American Postal Workers Union, as well as on the Board of Directors for the Postal Credit Union.

Mark was a devoted husband, dad and grandpa. His primary joy in life was traveling both near and far to attend his children’s and grandchildren’s numerous events and activities. When not cheering them on, he spent much time rooting for his beloved Hawkeyes, Bears and Cubs. Additionally, Mark was quite an avid hunter in his earlier life and a gifted fishman during his mid-to-later years. What’s more, Mark was an intuitive (or lucky) morel hunter, always sharing his bounty with family, friends and neighbors. Above all, Mark enjoyed spending time with his wife, Joanna, both in their younger years while on family vacations to the Dells, Adventureland, Great America, and ball games. After retiring from the post office, he and Joanna spent many months snow birding and travelling throughout the American Southeast, including and especially to Pensacola, Destin, Ft. Walton Beach and Gulf Shores. He loved reading, doing crosswords, meeting friends at the casinos, walking along the river wall and watching eagles.

His light-hearted, sharp-witted humor always drew a laugh and will be greatly missed. “Don’t get smart! Just stay the way you are!” was one of his favorite, go-to sayings.

He is survived by his children, Todd (Maureen Corcoran) Wolbers, of Oshkosh, WI, Chad (Regan) Wolbers, of Dubuque, and Jason (Tony Ritschard) Wolbers of Madison, WI.; grandchildren, B, Liam (fiancée Isabella), Kenna, Josie, and Gavin; siblings, Larry (Katie) Wolbers, Robert (Margot) Wolbers, John (Monica) Wolbers, Brian (Sharon) Wolbers, Carol (Keith) Hilkin, Gwen (Ken) Loes, Jolene (Dick) Bybee, Martha (Paul) Gartner, Phyllis Wolbers, and Veronica Gaston; siblings-in-law, Linda Stanton and Leroy Bastian; along with many nieces and nephews.

Mark is preceded in death by his wife Joanna, his parents, his mother and father-in-law, Ivan and Sylvia Blomgren, siblings, Samuel Wolbers, Mary Ann (Dick) Hefel, Eunice Bastian, and Neal Wolbers, siblings-in-law, Darrell Stanton, and Mike and Sharon Long; niece and nephews, Andrew Wolbers, Josh Wolbers, Dianne Fritsch, and Walter Long.

Memorials in Mark’s name may be directed to the Finley Health Foundation, Hospice of Dubuque, and Stonehill Health Center.
