Mary A. Eggers
Mary A. Eggers, 90, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Saturday morning, January 25, 2025, at Clover Ridge Place in Maquoketa.
Born Mary Angela Hand on May 11, 1934, in Clinton, Iowa, she was a daughter to Dave and Lydia (Powers) Hand. Mary’s early years were spent in the halls of Elvira School and later at Our Lady of Angels Catholic High School, where she graduated in 1952. It was at Elvira that her athletic skills shone through as a high scorer on the basketball court, a passion that stayed with her throughout her life. On her birthday in 1957, she married the love of her life, Dale Edward Eggers, and together they embarked on a journey that would see the birth of their four sons: Robert “Bob,” Dan, Tim, and Terry.
As a devoted homemaker and farm wife, Mary poured her heart into raising her boys and managing the household with grace and efficiency. Once her sons had grown, she extended her caring nature to the community, providing in-home care for several area residents.
Mary was deeply rooted in her Catholic faith, attending St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Otter Creek and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. Her love for basketball remained constant, with a particular fondness for college men’s basketball and her cherished Iowa Hawkeyes. Her interests also included dancing, bowling, and cultivating flowers. Known for her impeccable standards, she also took pride in maintaining a spotless home and car. She also was a social butterfly and relished visiting her many friends, never missing an opportunity to share a story or a laugh.
Mary’s legacy is carried on by her loving sons, Robert “Bob” Eggers of Maquoketa, IA, Dan (Lisa) Eggers of Kaufman, TX, Tim Eggers of Maquoketa, IA, and Terry (Julie) Eggers of Olathe, KS. Her memory will also be cherished by her three grandchildren, Nick (Kayla) Eggers and their son Holden of Forney, TX, Emily Eggers (Shane Swenson) of Denver, CO, and Sam Eggers of Kaufman, TX. She leaves behind her sister-in-law, Harriet Hand of Eldridge, IA, alongside numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding Mary in death were her parents, her beloved husband Dale, who passed on May 6, 2023, her brothers Joe, Harold, Glen, and David Hand, and her sister Margaret Hand.
A funeral mass celebrating her life will be held at 11 A.M., Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral beginning at 9:30 A.M. at the church. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa.
