Mary Ann Theisen

Mary Ann Theisen, 96, of Dubuque, died Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the Bethany Home in Dubuque.
Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 10:15 am Saturday, July 19, 2025 at Holy Spirit Parish – Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mary will be 10:30 am Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Holy Spirit Parish – Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Raymond Burkle as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Dubuque.

Mary was born March 22, 1929, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of George and Carrie (Trentz) Wagner. She was united in marriage to Donald J. Theisen on April 17, 1948. He preceded her in death on September 2, 2004.

Mary graduated in 1946 from the Immaculate Conception Academy in Dubuque.

She was a stay at home mom until David, the youngest, was in second grade. Mary then went to work at the Telegraph Herald and the First National Bank. She retired 17 years later. Mary then volunteered at Stonehill Care Center and the Dubuque Food Pantry. She also made many hats and blankets for those in need.

Mary was a member of the Rosary Society of Sacred Heart Church and the Catholic Daughters of America.

Survivors include her children, Ronald Theisen of Dubuque, Jim (Mary) Theisen of Mansfield, TX, Steve (Sue) Theisen of Hudson, IA, Donna (Fred Leffert) Theisen of San Francisco, CA, David (Anne Mary) Theisen of Tewksbury, MA; 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter Wagner of St. John’s, FL; one sister, Helen O’Leary of Dubuque; good friend Joe MacDonald of Dubuque, and his daughter, Laurie (Greg) Parker.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Garrett Theisen, seven siblings, George (Mary), John (Mary Lou), Tony (Shirley), Joe (Monica), Leo (Alice) Wagner, Margaret (Merl) Goerdt-Doerr, Dorothy (Lee) Eisbach, one brother-in-law, Bob O’Leary, and many in-laws and relatives on the Theisen side of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Dubuque Food Pantry and Bethany Home.

Mary’s family would like to thank the staff at Bethany Home for their care and support.
