Mary E. Colin
Mary Elizabeth (Thompson) Colin, age 95, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2026 with her family by her side.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 John F. Kennedy Road is entrusted with arrangements.
Mary was born October 11, 1930, in New Diggings, Wisconsin, the daughter of Clifford and Marian (Morrison) Thompson. She married Stanley B. Colin on August 12, 1951, at the University of Dubuque Chapel. He preceded her in death in April of 1985.
Mary graduated from New Diggings School in 1948 and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Dubuque in 1952. Throughout her life she worked in a variety of roles that reflected her creativity and care for others, including at Singer Sewing in Dubuque, Clarke College, Scales Mound Schools, SoFro/JoAnn Fabrics in Dubuque, and MiniMasterpieces Preschool.
She was a longtime supporter and donor to the Dubuque Area Swimmin’ Hurricanes (DASH) and MiniMasterpieces Preschool. Mary was an enthusiastic sports fan, cheering on Iowa Hawkeye football, basketball, and swimming with her signature “Go Hawks!” In recent years she also followed the University of Oregon Ducks and University of Utah Utes athletic equipment departments, the University of Northern Iowa Panthers swim team, and U.S. Paralympic Swimming.
Mary found joy in sewing, cooking, and caring for her family. Conversations with her grandsons were the highlight of her days. Her grandchildren, family, and friends were the light of her life.
She is survived by her son, Douglas (Marie) Colin; her grandsons, Benjamin, John, and William Colin; her sister, Kate Wandschneider; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley; her sister, Anna (Bob) Robbins; her brother, Joseph “Bill” (Mary Ann) Thompson; and her brother-in-law Roger Wandschneider.
Mary’s family extends heartfelt thanks to her caregivers at Stonehill and No Place Like Home, especially Diane, Michelle, Nubia, Kay, Sharon, and Carol, her friends and co-workers at SoFro/JoAnn Fabrics, Jamie Burger for compassionate hospice care, and to Jo for always being the best hairstylist, and the Kass family.
Memorials may be given to the Dubuque Area Swimmin’ Hurricanes or U.S. Paralympic Swimming.
