In loving memory of Mary Lou “Mary” McFadden, 86, of Dubuque, who passed away peacefully at home on September 7, 2026. Mary Lou was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, September 11, 2026 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home. The Mass of Christian Burial for Mary will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at Resurrection Catholic Church. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery – New Melleray.

Mary was born on July 25, 1940, in Dubuque, to William P. and Mary M. (Theisen) Gansen. She is one of 9 siblings, Florence Delaney, Bernie, Cy, Eddie, Melita LaPoint, Bill, and Shirley Eppler all of whom predeceased her as did her parents

Her early years were spent on the family farm in Peosta. Then her family moved to Dubuque where she graduated from the Visitation Academy in 1958.  After graduation she worked at the telephone company.

Walter P. McFadden became her partner in love and life on June 29, 1963.   They young couple initially shared a home with Mary’s parents so they could help her disabled mother.  Eventually they built a home on the west side of Dubuque which she happily inhabited for the rest of her days. Walter preceded her in death, too early, on September 13, 2011.

After all her daughters started school, Mary followed a lifelong dream and graduated from Capri Cosmetology in 1974.  Shortly after, she established Country Charm Beauty Salon where she happily spent 28 years helping people look their best while making connections through conversations about life experiences.

Outside of work, she loved spending time with her family and friends.  If she was not out gardening or sewing, she would likely be found in the kitchen where her dinner table was open to all and a place of laughter, love and great eats.  She also was a faithful member of Resurrection Church and assisted with Our Lady Rosary Makers.  Mary will be remembered for her kindness and ability to make everyone feel special and welcome.

She raised three daughters: Dina (Michael) Lane of Hartford, WI, Angela (Joe) Hilby of Asbury, IA and Marla (Scott) Lind of Ontario, WI.  She also shared life lessons with her five grandchildren, Signey (Zack) Kaldenberg, Matthew (Kimberly) Lane, Seanna (Cade) Boge, Stephanie Lane, and Britney Lane.  After Walt’s passing, she was fortunate to gain a bonus family, Hilarie (James) Bird and golden grandchildren, Carson and Owen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Special Olympics Iowa. Mary found joy in spending time with the winter athletes annually.
