Mary, the oldest of six children, was born to Paul and Marjorie (Keeler) Dolan in Mason City on August 30, 1950. After Paul passed away in 1958, Marge met and married Paul’s cousin, Ozzie, and the family moved to Dubuque in 1960, where they welcomed three more children. Mary attended Holy Ghost Catholic Grade School and Wahlert Catholic High School, graduating in 1968. She received her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1972, creating lasting friendships.
She was united in marriage to Charles Neuhaus on November 27, 1982. They enjoyed many years together camping and taking family vacations as they raised their two wonderful daughters, Beth and Anna. When Chuck passed away in 2016, Mary never dreamed she would date again until the spring of 2025, when she was reunited with an old friend, Gary Wagner. They shared nine months of companionship together and were looking forward to their upcoming wedding in June.
Mary loved being a teacher as witnessed during her 30+ years teaching kindergarten in the West Dubuque Community Schools. After retiring, Mary enjoyed time with family and friends, taking in theater and movies, dining out, drinking margaritas and playing games, especially word games- Scrabble being her favorite! Mary’s Catholic faith was also important to her and she found peace in her weekly adoration at the Power of Prayer Chapel. In her free time, Mary found joy in reading, crocheting, and puzzling. Mary made sure everyone’s birthday was special. She always sent thoughtful birthday cards filled with confetti to her dear family and friends.
Mary is survived by her children, Beth Neuhaus, and Anna Neuhaus; fiancé, Gary Wagner; siblings, Kathy (Mike) Weibel of LaCrosse, WI, Greg (Janis) Dolan of Glendale, AZ, Tom (Cecilia) Dolan of San Bernardino, CA, Deb (Dave) Welsh of Dubuque, Marta (Randy) Bender of Bellevue, IA, Barb (Chris) Ehlers of Dubuque, and Amy (Joe Andresen) Dolan of Dubuque. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ozzie and Marge Dolan, husband, Chuck Neuhaus, brother, Jim Dolan, and niece, Andrea Kirby.
Mary’s family wishes to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Dubuque and Drs. Loc, Mohr, and Rodriguez for their dedicated care and compassion. A heartfelt thank you to Gary for his loving care of Mary these last months, and to Mary’s life-long best friend, Patti Bries. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
A Mary Neuhaus Memorial Fund has been established.
The Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Funeral Home and Crematory is entrusted with arrangements.
