Michael L. “Mike” Burns, 63, of Marion, Iowa, and formerly of Maquoketa, died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

Michael Lynn Burns was born May 3, 1963, in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Roy Kenneth and Shirley Jean (Beach) Burns.  Mike grew up in Maquoketa and graduated from Maquoketa Community High School in 1981. He went on to earn an associate degree from Northeast Iowa Technical Institute in 1983 and later received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from the University of Dubuque in 1985. His education reflected the determination and steady work ethic that guided him throughout his life.

On September 23, 1989, he married Diane Powell in Clinton, Iowa. They shared three children together, Jonathon, Thomas, and Ruthann.  Though they are not still married, Diane remained a cherished friend. Mike was a devoted father and grandfather whose love for his family was evident in the care, encouragement, and support he gave throughout the years.

Mike worked for REM Iowa for more than 21 years. He began his career there as a direct support professional then worked many years in the accounting department.

Mike valued the simple pleasures of life and found happiness in the things that interested him most.  He was an avid reader, his favorite authors included Stephen King and J.K. Rowling. He also enjoyed participating in auctions and collecting Budweiser beer steins.

Those left to honor his memory including his children, Jonathon Burns of Cedar Rapids, IA, Thomas (Megan) Burns of Davenport, IA, and Ruthann (Seth Edfors) Burns of Clinton, IA; 4 grandchildren, Lyla, Lainey, Olivia, and Amelia; brothers, Kevin (Ann) Burns of Maquoketa, IA, Keith Burns of Maquoketa, IA, and Ken (Sheryl) Burns of Maquoketa, IA; and a brother-in-law, Larry Davis of Maquoketa, IA.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Pamela Davis.

A memorial gathering of family and friends celebrating Mike’s life will be held from 9 A.M. to 11 A.M., Saturday, June 27, 2026, in “The Bistro” at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, Michael L. “Mike” Burns memorial fund has been established.
