Michael R. Brownell
Michael R. Brownell, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at his home in Delmar, Iowa, at the age of 74.
Michael Richard Brownell was born on June 29, 1950, in Anamosa, Iowa, the son of Richard and Virginia (Shunter) Brownell. As a young man, he graduated from Midland of Wyoming in 1968, where he left his mark as a valuable player on the football team. He pursued a college degree in business, setting the stage for his future endeavors. In the summer of 2014, he married the love of his life, Kathy Edwards, on July 21 in Las Vegas.
Professionally, Mike was a man of the road. For over 40 years, he drove a semi, logging over 3 million miles—a testament to his dedication and love for the open road. His professional journey led him to establish Brownell Trucking, his own trucking business. Mike’s routes took him across the country, through the rugged terrains of Alaska, and into the heart of Canada, showcasing his adventurous spirit and resilience.
Mike’s interests were as grounded as they were diverse. Growing up on a farm, he developed a lifelong passion for gardening, nurturing life from the soil with the same care he gave to those around him. A fervent admirer of John Wayne, Mike collected nearly every film the iconic actor starred in, finding inspiration and enjoyment in the tales of courage and honor. At his core, Mike was a man with a big heart, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Mike leaves behind a legacy of love and memories that will be cherished by his wife, Kathy, and his sons, Craig and Derek Brownell of South Dakota. His brothers, Brad (Julie) Brownell of Wyoming, IA, and Kevin “Bruno” (Jana) Brownell of Wyoming, IA, will remember him as a guiding light in their lives. His five grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy, will continue to grow under the influence of his memory. Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Beverly Brownell.
A visitation to honor Mike’s life will be held in the Bistro at Carson Celebration of Life Center on Wednesday, March 12 from 4-7 P.M. A private family burial will be at Pence cemetery.
