Neil Edward Ransford, age 91, of Dubuque, IA, passed away on February 28, 2024, surrounded by loving family members.

Services will be held Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1276 White St., Dubuque, IA 52001. The burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road is assisting the family.

Neil was born September 5, 1932, in Dubuque, IA, to Gertrude and Emery Ransford. He is preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, Darlene, of 51 years, dear daughter Tamra Howard, and treasured grandson, Chad Flynn.

Neil is survived by brother, Dale Ransford, children, Mike (Bev), Theresa (Carl) Thompson, Ruth Elsinger, and Paul (Jaymie), 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

His door was always open, and he’d gladly help anyone out with a ride, perhaps stopping for a snack along the way. He enjoyed participating in many activities throughout his community.

Neil and Darlene were longstanding members of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He was a founding member of the Key West Sportsman’s Club, a Boy Scout Leader, and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels as well as Finley Hospital.

Neil served in the Navy Seabees and was proudly employed with John Deere for 40 years. Neil was an avid bowler, a skilled card-player, and a frequent traveler with Darlene, often bringing back souvenirs for his family. He was a frequent patron at one of his favorite Dubuque establishments, The Pit Stop. Neil had a great sense of humor and told us the best stories. He will be forever missed.
