Nicholas “Nick” Richard Greene, 43, of Hanover, Illinois, lost his long battle with Diabetes on September 17, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. Nick was surrounded by his loving family in his final moments.  With one last act of kindness, he helped others through the act of organ and tissue donation.

A Celebration of Nick’s life will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at L & J Bootlegger Saloon, 219 Jefferson St., Hanover, IL. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is assisting the family.

Nick was born November 8, 1982, to Richard Greene and Diana Patterson Harms in Galena. Nick attended River Ridge School. Nick loved anything outdoors, including hunting, fishing, boating, four-wheeling, farming, morel hunting, and tinkering with vehicles. In his early years, he was a volunteer driver for the local ambulance. Nick was the type of man who would be there for anyone at the drop of a hat. As his mother would say, he was a MacGyver; he could fix just about anything. He was also the baby guru. If your baby would not quit crying, within seconds of Nick holding them, they would be calm and falling asleep. Most of all, he loved being a father and grandpa, AKA “Crampa,” as his grandson Jaxtyn would say.

Nick worked numerous jobs over the years, including farming, HVAC, concrete, tinkering with vehicles, and helping a friend with farrier work. Nick recently found joy in cooking at a local bar.

The loss of Nick is heartbreaking and felt deeply by all his family and friends. He fought hard for years, even when the odds were against him.

Survivors to cherish his memory are his wife, Renee Greene; beloved children, Joshua True, Kearston (Jesus) Greene Jasso, Remington Greene, and Charlie McColley; his adored grandbabies Jaxtyn, Avah, and Mariana; mother, Diana (Steve) Patterson Harms; dad, Dale (Julie) Harms; siblings, Robert (Kim) Harms, Brenda (Kevin) Williams, Peter (Joy) Harms, Veronica (David) Phillips, Raymond Greene, Carissa (Ricardo) Barajas, Caitlin (Adam) Kaiser, and Thomas Harms; mother-in-law, Millie McColley; and many uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Nick was preceded in death by his dad, Richard Greene; grandparents, Robert and Betty Patterson, Vince and Bernice Estavillo, and Bernard and Marie Greene; and father-in-law Joesph McColley.

Nick’s family would like to thank the Elizabeth and Hanover First Responders for the years of care they provided to Nick and for saving his life multiple times over the years. They would also like to thank MercyOne ER, ICU, and AirCare, as well as the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, for the care and compassion they showed not only Nick, but also his family, during the last week he was with us. They would also like to thank the Iowa Donor Network for showing so much care and compassion and for advocating throughout the process.
