Patricia A. Maze
Patricia A. “Pat” Maze, 87, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away on Monday, March 30, 2026, at home.
Patricia Ann Nickell was born July 12, 1938, to Glen and Ethel (Hanson) Nickell in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She was active in band and vocal music, drama, business clubs, editor of the Eaglet, a member of the National Honor Society and cheerleader for 7 years. Her senior year she was awarded the Wright County Bar Association Citizenship Award, a scholarship for Eagle Grove Junior College from Woman’ s Club and became Miss Eagle Grove Future Business Leader, Miss Iowa and runner up Miss USA in that organization. She worked as a legal assistant and was manager of the Eagle Grove Chamber of Commerce for one year.
Ted Maze and Pat married in the Congregational Church of Eagle Grove on March 16, 1958. In 1963 they moved with children Mark and Michelle to Maquoketa, where Ted accepted the management of Green Bay Lumber Company. Pat had over 30 piano and organ students, did altering in her home, played piano and was a church organist for over 35 years. She had played for over a hundred weddings and hundreds of funerals. Pat wrote a Lenten Cantata “A Simple King” which was performed by the United Church of Christ Choir. She was legal secretary for Ken Wright. She served on the Jackson County Hospital Board, serving one year as Chairman. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and Woman’s Club and served as a hospice volunteer for 14 years.
Pat enjoyed sewing, cross-stitching and knitting. Many of those projects were gifts to friends and loved ones. She wrote their Christmas poem for 49 years and for the last several years this was enclosed with a homemade cross-stitched greeting card.
She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, Suduko, golf, playing cards and games. She loved entertaining and being with her family.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Nadine Chelesvig. Surviving is her husband, Ted; children, Mark (Cathy) Maze of Maquoketa, Michelle (Mark) Hughes of Maquoketa, IA, and MaryPat Azevedo of AZ. Also 5 grandchildren, Patricia Azevedo, Djanice (Zach) Migdol, and Ben Azevedo, and Gracie and Lorelie Gephart; 2 step-grandchildren, Dalton Youngblood, and Megan Hill; 1 great-grandson, Jeremiah Migdol; brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews and extended family.
A service to celebrate Pat’s life will be held at 12 P.M., Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, with a luncheon immediately following in “The Bistro” at Carson’s from 1 to 3 P.M. All are welcome to attend. A private family burial will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to the Maquoketa Public Library or Hospice of Jackson County.
